Discussing death with a 4 year old?

Long story short- my mother in law died in July. We told our son that she was always with him. She went to heaven but we can always feel and talk to her. He asks questions and we answer them as they come. Well, last week our cat had to be put down( he had fluid in his lungs and was very sick). Our son has still not noticed he is not here. The cat hid most of the time. Question is- what should we tell him? We are scared it is too soon after Grama's deat and he will think everyone is going to leave... Any thoughts are appreciated!
 
I wouldn't mention the cat until he asked...I myself always have conflicting thoughts on this....the truth hurts...but its better they now...and I also wonder...if the cat ran away...how does that hurt them? It would be based on what your 4 year old can understand....Good Luck and I'm sorry about your mom in law...God Bless
