The really significant suffering and evil in the world is that created by human beings ... Human choice is real and it has consequences. But it is more complicated than that ... when the results of human choices become encoded in social structures and cultural symbols, they take on a life of their own. Most of us don't choose to be racist, or sexists, or to cause other human beings to go hungry or species to become extinct. Yet we participate in social and cultural systems that have these effects.
