Discuss: weight discrimination...?

I just watched a documentary about the taboo of fat in society. Now I'm watching Tyra, who is discussing discrimination against fat people.

I grew up being overweight, but have just recently dropped down to a normal weight and am currently dropping the last few pounds to get perfectly lean. Though I'm not as radically against fat people as some people on Tyra, I do think that obesity is not something that should be promoted. Unlike race, gender, or sexuality, one isn't forced to have a certain body fat percentage.

I'm really confused when fat women say 'I'm proud and happy to be fat'. I guess it's better for these people to be happy than depressed, but I'm concerned that this kind of attitude promotes obesity and makes it more appealing, leading people to care less about their physical health.

There is an organization called NAAFA that seeks to fight discrimination against fat people. They claim that fat is beautiful, healthy, and uncontrollable. These people argue that diets do not work, that if you're fat, you'll always be fat.

I agree than many fat people are treated too harshly, but I think of obesity as any other addiction. I wouldn't treat an alchoholic like dirt, but their alcoholism wouldn't exactly raise my opinion of them.

Although I obviously have a stance on the issue, I pride myself on being open-minded. I'd like to hear the other side of the argument. I want to understand why some people support this movement.

The show doesn't promote obesity, it only trying to help fat women to boost their self-esteem. I hate it when people forced someone to diet just so she can "fit" into the society. Diets won't work if one doesn't have the 2 D's (discipline & determination). It would be more acceptable if one has to do it for health reason & not as a standard of beauty. Sadly many people associate fatness with ugliness & that's certainly won't help obese people.

@ Y???hh, ?ts ?shl??. (: - what makes you hate fat people? Unless the majority of them had done something wrong with you, there's no reason for you to think like that. That's too stupid, harsh & insensitive. How would you feel if you were on their shoes?
