discuss the nature-nurture debate inrelation to individual development?

nature pertains to developmental stages of human persons that is naturally taking place as part of growing process

nurture pertains to the development of human persons in relation to environment and situations affecting them

Traditionally, psychologists used to either support the nuture side of the argument and these were called either the 'empiricists,' or the 'nativists.' However, nowadays scientists and psychologist are moe likely to state that development is a combination of both influences.

Individuals inherit two sets of chromosomes, one set from each parent, and it is the genes and the chromosomes that become our genetic makeup. So, different people acquire different characteristics from their parents.

Babies are born with different temperaments, which through environment influences, and social influences becomes shaped into personality.

Different parents interact with thier babies in different ways, causing individual differences to develop.

In terms of intelligence psychometricians attempt to measure intelligence through testing, and one of the most well kown of these is Hans J Eysenck (LOOK THIS UP IN THE TEXT BOOK).

Intelligence testing is one of the most controversial psychological areas, politically, in terms of the national curriculum. Since, some eduactionalists assume that in telligence is innate, and this leads people to neglect disadvantaged children, because they have low expectations of them and fail to make fair changes to help them develop. However, those educationalists who beleive that children can develop through nurture acknowledge that changes can be made to help the child develop.

If school children are tested, it may be assumed from the results that they can not improve much and could become streamed too early (streamed: put into a low acheivers group).

Some children are born with more capablitiy than others but they can catch up and even overtake others if they have the right environmental stimulation.

Was anyone promised ten points?
