Discuss the development of the writings of the Quran?

Discuss the development of the writings of the Quran from the time Muhammad received the vision from the Angel Gabriel to the manifestation of the the text. How did it formulate? By word of mouth? Was it written down and when? Include detials about the Quran such as the type of Genre, number of chapters or books and how they are orgainized. What made certian documents to be apart of the Holy Qur'an?
