The very phrases were worn so threadbare that they evoked no image except that of a turbaned 'character' leaking sawdust at very pore as he pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne.

.threadbare-what kind of material does this word usually refer to? How is nick using it here?

.a turbaned 'character'?-why turbaned? Why is 'character' in quotation marks?

.leaking sawdust at very pore-this is a very strange image. What is sawdust? What is a pore? Is it normal to have an image which combines the two? What is the effect of this combination?

.pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne-the Bois de Boulogne is a park in Paris. There are no tigers there. Why does Nick evoke this image?
