In KC, locally owned grocery chains like Price Chopper, Hen House, and Sun
Fresh ran Safeway out of town on a rail a long time ago. We have a lot of
Hy-Vee stores too which isn't a locally based chain and I find them less
appealing for everyday shopping. But I'm happy to say the majority of
grocers around here are locally based chains run by locally based ownership
groups. I'm inclined to think that's a good thing.

Franchisees, basically. It works the same with the stores here. They are
still beholden to whatever their particular franchise agreement entails,
including store brands and perhaps certain supply chains. .

We have some grocers who own franchises in multiple chains, Cosentino's for
example, who run some really nice stores.
