I've been dealing with lurabar and sciatic pain for years now (since an injury sustained on deployment with the Army in 2000). I have undergone most of the conservative therapies and do not want to have a fusion. My neurosurgeon has referred me to a colleague to discuss discoplasty, but I can't seem to find any information on this procedure. Has anyone had one, considered one, or researched one?

Hi dustoffkid,

Since no one has responded to your post, I am responding with a guess.

I wondered if you might be referring to a discectomy? I have only seen the term used when referring to other parts of the body, like in TMJ. I think a discoplasty MAY refer to a procedure where a little bit of some cartilege would be shaved off to create a little more space -- but I am totally guessing here.

Sorry no one seems to be of much help. It certainly isn't commonly done or you'd have lots of responses!!

Are you thinking of a percutaneous discectomy probe as your suggested procedure. I have also low back pain, that has spread through both sides of my hips and now weakness and nurabness in both legs upon standing anymore than 2 mins. I also have DDD, sciatic nerve pain along with others. At the moment I am doing ESI, but if they don't work the above will be my next alternative outside of more invasive procedures.

I appreciate your answers, folks....

That's kind of the reason I asked on here, most of the online research I have done addresses TMJ, as well. I go for the consult on the 23rd; I will be sure to update you guys on how it went and what it's all about.

hey dustoff,

discoplasty is teh medical term for ARD artifical disc replacement. search ADR. good luck

Actually, what it ended up being was targeted disc decompression (TDD), and I apparently am not a good candidate for the procedure. Sigh. Back to the drawing board....
