I notice slight discomfort in my lower sides, around where my kidneys are when I drink energy drinks (monster, redbull, etc.) Would this be the reason?

Yeah energy drinks can cause pains in your sides if they are drunk in large quantities or on a regular basis.
I myself have recently given up energy drinks for water as i was on about 8 a night at work and for a while felt nothing.
They can also raise your heartrate and cause other problems if you over do them.
I drink maybe one to two a day. But I don't drink that much water, and I have heard these can dehydrate you. I shall try drinking more water, and if that doesn't help I'll stop drinking these.
