I have had severe leg pain for 4 years now. First they thought it was from a knee problem I have but after surgically correcting that the pain continued. I just had an EMG and nerve conduction study and then was sent for an MRI. The MRI shows I have 4 bulging discs in my L spine. 3 of them are minor but one is in my S1 nerve.

The neurologist has started me on physical therapy and the physical therapist says he doesn't think he can help me b/c I've been in pain too long. I have 2 kiRAB and we would like to have a third soon.

Any advice or tips here??? I'm afraid to get pregnant again and I'm worried about how they will ever fix my back. My aunt had the same problem and went straight to a neurosurgeon and had back surgery. She is 100% better now and wants me to go see her surgeon but I know that some people are even worse after surgery so I'm scared to do that also.

While some people don't do well with surgery, many do. My mom had surgery for a similar condition and was so happy she had it done - she was about 60 at the time and has even forgotten she had it done! If something is impinging on a nerve it can indeed help to have surgery if all other treatment options have been considered and/or exhausted.

I chose not to have kiRAB as I have done well with my back surgery (done in my early 20's) but never wanted to garable with the affects of pregnancy on the spine.

Hi Amanda,
Sorry you are having so much pain. I'm sure it is very hard to be a Mom of two little ones and deal with your back issues!
I think you will find that most surgeons will not do surgery on bulging discs. Most of them are even hesitate to do surgery on herniated discs without attempting conservative treatments first. This is actually a good thing for most patients. As you have seen reading this board, surgery can sometimes not help or even make the problem worse. Even though you have been hurting for so long, my advice would be to try all the conservative treatments such as PT, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, etc. Pregnancy will aggravate the problem so you may want to hold off until you get some relief....pregnancy, bad back and two little kiRAB might not be a good corabination! :dizzy: Good luck to you girl, I hope you feel better soon.
