Disabling services.

Hi,

Both on Windows and Linux I'm used to disabling services (daemons) running in the background I do not need. On my Android phoneI see there's a few I probably can do without, but I want to ask here before I disable them (using Autorun Killer). The ones I think I can stop are:

Gmail Storage (I do Gmail through K-9)
Google Partner Setup
Google Talk Service
Media Storage

I do not use Google Talk or the built in Camera/Gallery/Music players. Am I safe disabling these four, or are they used for other things?

IIRC, Google Partner Setup is required for your google accounts. I remember killing that off once and not being able to sync contacts with Google. Could have been coincidence of course.

GTalk is sometimes used by other apps for stuff, and again iirc it's the underlying communication system for some other things. Some games use the underlying APIs provided by GTalk for multiplayer stuff for example.

Media Storage... I've wondered about this too. I have media (images, MP3s, videos, etc) on my phone. When I disabled it the gallery didn't display thumbnails for new pics any more. Again, could be co-incidence, I was killing lots of things around that time to experiment. Kill it off and see.

If stuff is needed you may find these services restart automatically some time later. You could try killing them off, using your phone normally for a day, and checking to see if they've started themselves automatically. If they have then you know something is using them.

I think some of the system services shouldn't be disabled. If so, some google functions, such as google sync, gmail will loose it's function, be careful.
