"Dirty Harry" and "Cobra"

I'm just watching Dirty Harry and a question has occurred to me.
Did Sylvester Stallone cast Reni Santoni in Cobra BECAUSE he was in Dirty Harry ?
I've always thought of Cobra as a "reworking" or "reimagining" of Dirty Harry.

I agree...it was a bit of an homage, though not a very good one.

Santoni played practically the same role as he did in Dirty Harry, Stallone's character had that same healthy disrespect for authority that Callahan had, and it even had a psycho villain.

I didnt know the connection between Cobra/Dirty Harry. I read Cobra is kinda like what Beverley Hills Cop would have been if Stallone had been in it rather than Eddie Murphy

I loved the tagline for Cobra :
"Crime is a disease. Meet the cure" :D
Yes, I know it's a line from the film !
Brigitte Nielson is well-fit in this movie !

I think you may have misheard that...in fact, the original Beverley Hills Cop was actually written with Stallone on mind for the title role, and it was to me a more serious, straight action thriller. But Stallone dropped out, and it was re written for the up and coming Eddie Murphy.

I'll agree that although dated and something of a throwback, Cobra did have some good action sequences.

But one thing that always bothered me was that strange psycho cult. What exactly was the reason for their existence, what were they trying to do, what were the odd rituals they were performing with the axes?

It just seemed they were thrown in as a bunch of nutters, there to be despatched by Stallone at will.

But if there had been some sort of reeason given for their motivation, it might have made for a more coherent and believable plot.

Cobra is a great 80s movie,i still have my vhs lol a few good songs on it 2,stallone always seems to have good soundtracks on his 80s movies lol wasnt the nightstalker dude in the xfiles aswell?

terrible film. Didn't it set some kind of record for the number of people killed on screen?

The Beverly Hills Cop link is that BHC was indeed going to star Stallone. He came on board and wrote various drafts which removed the comedy and kept increasing the action sequences. Shortly before shooting was to begin, the producers decided they couldn't afford to make such an action-driven movie and had lost their original vision of the project, so Stallone dropped out. Eddie Murphy came in at short notice and improvised much of his dialogue. In the original drafts, the Jenny Summers character was Stallone's girlfriend but this was changed to a friend as Lisa Eilbacher had already been cast!

Stallone took the action sequences he'd developed for BHC and used them in Cobra. So glad they made the change, BHC is one of my favourites whereas Cobra was 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back:D
