Director on an animated series?

Starting out. I'm fresh out of high school and have been doing some research on how to achieve this goal. So far the only way to achieve my ideal goal is to move to Japan seeing how their Directors and Animation Directors are interchangable. Please do you have any suggestions for courses I need to take to try and realize my ambition? Thank you in advance.
 
I really don't think moving to Japan would be the right course of action.

As for courses, find a school with a strong arts and/or animation curriculum. Take classes on drawing, art history, animation - both traditional and digital - and basically the other facets that go into learning the animation business. Classes on creative writing, literature and storytelling probably couldn't hurt either. Hone your artistic style while in school, and be prepared to spend some time in some low-level internships before you even sniff your first actual job. Bottom line, work your way up - you're not going to be selling a pilot to a network after only a year of school. Work hard and keep at it.
