dim T3 display for nightime reading?

I've looked for a while for an add on program to let me dim the T3 below its built-in lower limit -- this is important for me when reading in dark situations where even the lowest brigtness setting can be hard on the eyes.

I've found a number of programs that allow brightness adjustment, but none of them let my device go below the built-in lower limit.

any suggestions? what to the rest of you when reading in bed, for example?

I've never seen a program that allows you to dim the screen beyond what the hardware allows as the lowest limit. I think this may be hardcoded in the OS.
 
There is a freeware utility that completely TURNS off the backlight - making it nearly impossible to see ANYTHING in ANY light at all. Wouldn't recommend that.

There is another Desktop Accessory (you'd need a DA launcher like TealLaunch to use it) that plays with the brightness a little bit beyond the "default parameters;" I'll find the name of it and then edit this post with the name (if I can find it - believe it's AK Utilities and I noticed THEIR brightness bar "started" where the Palm setting "left off," leading me to believe there's more "headroom;" It's "AK Utilities" available from Freeware Palm. Also allows for a soft reset, some information, and a couple of other features. The review of it underneath is mine from some months back. I now use mReset instead, but remember it was good and stable. The backlight thing you'll have to experiment with yourself, as I leave mine at 25% all the time.

You don't even need a utility to turn off the backlight. Just hold down the power button for a few seconds. That actually works fine in direct sunlight but not so good for reading in the dark. :)

AKUtils, at least on my T665, doesn't do anything with the backlight except turn it off. I can't find any ecidence it activates a brightness bar at all. The link at FreewarmPalm is dead but the program is still available at the author's website.
 
Holding power on a T3 does nothing. Tapping the clock button on lower toolbar brings up brightness. Try lowering that to minimum.

Then activate AKUtil and get "different range," which allows a lower setting, at least in my experience. That's all I got!
 
Moose - I still get a 404 error when I try to get the program from the FreewarePalm link.

PTL - I keep forgetting I'm using a Clie. :) However, even when I bring up AKUtils with the brightness slider on, tapping on the little bulb still just turns off the backlight on my T665. It must behave differently either on a T3 or OS 5 machines in general.

Just checked again and the link seems good. I'm wondering if your running SP2 beta? perhaps that might be a reason?

I have also been to palmfreeware.com so many times that maybe it's cookie related but I wouldn't think that would cause a 404.

My ISP is SBC so perhaps that's got something to do with it as well.

Dunno. I'm running IE 6.0.28 with all the updates along wiith the usual collection ad blockers and a firewall. With all the different ways we have our computers set up now, I'm suprised links ever work. :)
 
Same here.....probably a security setting. I have Freeware set up as a trusted site with Java enabled as such...which could be the cause.

I've pinged the location based upon McAfee Visual Trace and it shows it as being "blocked" on the last two nodes of the 16 that exist between Modesto and "there".

Node 14 is located in Washington DC so it's probably that Big Brother has detected your political preference and "locked" you out. :D

At PTL's suggestion, I tried out AK Utils, but it does not let the brightness dim any further on my T3 -- in fact, the built in adjustment allows brightness settigns about 20% dimmer than AK Utils is capable of reaching. Maybe this difference from PTL's experience/memory has something to do with another sw I have installed (too many to list). In any case, it appears that there is no known way (yet?) to get further brightness reduction on the T3.
