Digital Spy Film Club

Cuttlefishspike suggested this idea in another thread, and I can't help but think this is a great plan. So I thought I'd do this thread to get the ball rolling...

The idea is to watch one film each week; the film should be broadcast on one of the 'Freeview' channels, as those without Sky would be at a disadvantage.

This thread will contain all that you'll need to know about where & when the film will be broadcast - all you need to do is sit down and watch it :)
The films can range from artsy-foreign pictures to mainstream classics; short or super long - it doesn't matter.

AfterwarRAB, you simply write your thoughts about the film in the specified thread. What did you like, what did you dislike and other general comments - nothing too intellectual is required, just an opinion :)

'Film Club' Thread Rules

This thread should be used to post ideas for future films, and to find out what the film is going to be each week. The actual discussion of the film will take place in a seperate thread created AFTER the film has screened (to avoid duplicate threaRAB and discussion of potential spoilers).

Should a thread not be present, feel free to create one. The format should be: 'Film Club - Week X - Name Of Film (year)'. So for example: Film Club - Week 21 - The Matrix (1999).

So, now it's up to you - take part as you wish :) Comments and suggestions welcome :)

Hey AdamJW,

You don't need to be a critic - just write your thoughts and feelings down and comment on what other people say :)

Which Thomas Crown Affair was it? Original or remake? Dunno about the remake (never seen it), but the original would have made a great film for discussion.

Like the idea.
Can't promise to watch every film every week, but I'd join in when I could.

Freeview I think is a good idea, ok the films might be a bit limited, and many people will have seen them before, but as you say, it'll give more people to join in the 'fun'.
It's a good excuse to sit down at a keyboard, get the kitting out and have a good blether.

Okie Dokie - it looks like we have at least some interest here so let's decide on some films in the coming week :)

I know there's a lot of dross on Freeview, but again it would be possible to extend the idea to other chanel line-ups eventually. Freeview is accessible to a larger number of people than Sky (with numbers increasing all the time on the way over to the analogue turnoff), and allows for the standard five channels plus those movies broadcast on BBC Three, ITV2, E4, etc...

Anyway - there are a fair number of decent films on this week. I would put forward either 'Blow (2001)' on CH4 10pm this Sunday or 'The Perfect Storm (2000)' on CH4 9.10pm this Saturday. Anyone have another suggestions?

:D I think that'll be the key to making this work - just join in when/if you can :)

Like the idea of Blow, never managed to see it and wanted to.

The perfect storm....mmmm..seen it, will watch it again if your desperate for my comments but they'll be catty lol, wasn't my idea of George Cloony and seamen... :o

Will have a look to see what's on freeview and see if I can suggest anything.

:D I've never seen 'The Perfect Storm', but I've seen 'Blow'. That said, I'd be happy to see 'Blow' again :)

OK then, we'll say that's two for 'Blow' so far ;) :D

I suppose we'll need a deadline for the weekly film ideas: Let's say that normally it'll be announced on a Wednesday, but this week we'll have an extended deadline until Friday just to get the ball rolling :)

Someone will need to make the final choice of how the selection process will work. I'm suggest some kind of democracy vote/second/third/fourth system would work best and the highest final tally wins.

For example:

third, etc

There won't be a set closing time - just the first person to 'call it' on the wednesday (someone might decide to do it at 12.01am, or it may not be done until 6pm) - just whoever can be bothered to find the running total of the weeks' film suggestions :D

So this weeks suggestions & votes will close on Friday, but normally it'll be Wednesday... That sound OK? Objections or a better way anyone?

Hmm... Does anyone think that it would be better to allow pre-chat about a film to create more interest in the film? Previously my concern has been spoilers; perhaps if the weekly thread contained a small FAQ on the
tags it would help avoid the problem?

What are people's thoughts?

Has anyone whos got european satellite TV with all of the German channels ever seen the special TV only Films they make for "Das Erste" (ARD), like the "Tatort" or "Polizeiruf 110" series?

Nice work damndirtyape. :)

Maybe we can ask Beth to set up a poll to decide the final choice out of the weekly nominations.

I agree with the below so I'll vote for Blow this week. :D

Nope - and I can't speak german either :D

Anyway, 'Film Club' is currently restricted to Terrestrial TV at the moment, although perhaps it would make a good thread in itself!

It's monday folks, so you only have 2 days in which to make up your mind for the next film (remember - it's going to be Wednesday to Wednesday). Seeing that we don't have any suggestions yet I'll put my two forward :)

We've had a prime time blockbuster film, so I thought we might go more late-night lo-budget for the next one...

1] Bhaji on the Beach (1993) - CH4 - Tuesday 6th - 12:20 till 2:10 AM
An early British/Asian classic from director Gurinder Chadha of 'Bend It Like Beckham (2002)' fame. It's very much a film of its time, but there are still a lot of interesting element to discuss here, such as 'the new Asian family unit' and 'women's rights'.

OR

2] Thursday (1998) - CH4 - Saturday 3rd - 2:20 till 3:45 AM
A personal favourite of mine; Comedy Thriller in a Tarantino-esque style featuring an early role for Aaron Eckhart. Not available on DVD (there was a region one disk, but it's since been deleted) and well worth a watch for those who like there films with a bit of 'bite'.

Put in your suggestions if you find something else that you'd prefer :)

I think that would be a better idea, to create the thread early and post any major spoilers in spoiler tags. Maybe start the thread as soon as the film has been decided?

This is a brilliant idea! I'm new to this forum, but would love to take part.

I've not watched bow before, so will happily watch it.
