Digital Cinemas List

Hi all,

I am planning on seeing avatar soon. I had intended to go to the nearest Imax but it is booked up for the rest of this year. I will see it in a 'normal' cinema but wanted to go to one which had been upgraded to a digital projection system with the 3D filters or whatever - i.e. to maximise the visual experience rather than a normal filmy cinema.

Does anyone know of a list of UK cinemas I can check to see where would be the best place to go?

my Cineworld has at least 2 digital projectors but trying to find out if they're showing a particular film in digital is impossible , the staff haven't a clue .

Sometimes Cineworld list the screening as 'Digital Screening' on their listings, but with Avatar i'd imagine that practically all showings of the 3D version would be in digital.

Frasera is right. The only difference between the "digital" version of the movie and the "film" version is that the digital one comes on a hard drive whereas the film one comes on a series of film reels.

For 3D there are two seperate projectors projecting slightly different images that the 3D glasses make sense of, meaning the viewer gets the proper 3D image.

If it says "Avatar 3D" in the cinemas listings then it's utilising Digital Projection.

The only 3D "film" version out there is the true IMAX 15/70. All 35mm prints are 2D.

And Digital 3D does NOT use two projectors side by side in a standard multiplex setup - just the one with special filter wheels mounted inside the projector head.

True IMAX 15/70 is the only 3D system that requires 2 projectors.

The new Odeon at the Metrocentre in Gateshead has IMAX 3D if that is any use to you. It opens today and I managed to get tickets online easily enough on Monday. It is showing Avatar, naturally.

DanV5 is right....

People need to do their homework...

Currently, the best 3D you can see is RealD 3D, which uses a special polarising device fitted in FRONT of a standard digital DLP projector. The data on the hard drive synchronises with the polariser and switches from left to right circular polarisation, 72 times per second per eye. You also really need a silvered screen.

With circular polarisation, you can tilt your head without losing 3D effect, unlike standard, vertically polarised, twin-projector, 70mm Imax films.

Dolby 3D just sucks.

If there was one those new fangled IMAX Digital screens nearby I'd probably watch Avatar there, as Waterloo IMAX is pretty much booked up solidly till mid January so I'm having to settle for regular 3D up local Odeon tonight.

However I wouldn't go to any great trouble to visit a Digital IMAX having read some very mixed opinions on the system, ranging from utter condemnation:

Producer Frank Marshall Says

Here is the RealD website which will give you an idea of which cinemas have RealD 3D systems -link

Planning on seeing Avatar today at my local Cineworld (Ipswich). It has 4 digital screens I think but I want to see it on the biggest one so I'll have to pop down and check out the times on their display screens (website doesn't state which screen and time, just the time).

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of Avatar screenings, if not all, will be digital (either 3D or 2D). James Cameron loves his technology so would probably insist on an all digital release.

While the Gateshead IMAX is Digital its a lot closer to the size of an average 70mm IMAX screen then a traditional cinema. Really enjoyed watching Avatar there (despite the story :)). That Sydney IMAX must look absolutely insane though  :D
