Digimon have religious undertones?

I never really thought of it as religious undertones. They were often pretty clear to me. As others have already mentioned, there are plenty of other anime series that have religious references and syrabolism besides the Digimon series. Yu-Gi-Oh! and Fushigi Yugi are the first ones that I think of off the top of my head. I agree with those who have said that they just add these references because of how cool it looks like.

As for the Digi-eggs, I never really saw it as being simular to reincarnation. Although Digimon that are destoryed in Adventure 01, 02, Froniter and Savers/Data Squad were reborn, they pretty much remerabered everything from their lives beforehand. The only exceptions were in Savers/Data Squad and Tamers since the idea of being reborn never came up in the series.

I have to agree, Digimon largely uses religious syrabolism for the coolness factors. I love the Angel designs, part angelic, part cyberpunk.

But one does see religious values within the show. FrienRABhip, sacrifice, love, hope, Good triumphing over evil, and other virtues that seem to resonate with such themes.

Umm. Well it has some religious tones, but they are not that consistant. Unless you count the Budism references throughout Season 1.(Which were cut from the dub) Like Joe and Sora chanting in the name of Budah in the Ghost episode. Sora's Mom working on the art of Budism flower arranging.

Season 2, the Kari episode where she goes to the Dark world I think they call their master God and Kari their Goddess. Also.. the narration (or at least in the spanish spain dub) Mentioned that Owikawa sold his soul to the devil in order to go to Digi-world.

Season 3. the Soveirgns are the Digimon GoRAB. Lopmon often refers them as my "Lord" and he/she alludes the lost of his/hers powers to his/hers God Punish him/her for sinning.

Season 4.. I don't recall any religious tones.

How can one forget that Lucemon is the Digimon equivalent of Lucifer?

Also, Seraphimon, Cherubimon and Ophanimon being the leaders of the Digital World was a reference the First Sphere in the Christian angelic hierarchy.
