Digimon Adventure 02 on CR and Funi Talkback (spoilers)

My thoughts on episode 19, I thought Takeru was awsome with that fight with the Kasier, this is not the same kid that cried a lot like in the first series. What the Kasier is doing creating a mutant digimon, that is a crime against nature.

Nice bladent product placement by Toei. Got to love them for that. I thought when Jun was hitchhiking, we might see some cameos by characters from Digimon, The Great Tokyo Crossing, like the woman with the sports car and the jerk with the van. What I thought would have been funny if that guy would have offered Jun a ride, than one second later you hear a slap, and Jun getting out of the van angry maybe seeing something like "Jerk" or "Pervert" or "Creep", etc., and you see his face has a slap mark on it or a black eye. Nothing like karma, even it is 3 years apart.

That does make sense. I've seen and heard some people who are seriously into shippings, mostly from the different Yu-Gi-Oh! series and Pokemon, but I can also see why people would say that they belong together.

I'm leading towarRAB that myself considering I was getting tired of the first ending them for awhile and I still really like the nice beat for this ending theme.

I do agree with you about ending theme, the designs for the 02 normal Champion forms and how useless Ankylomon was when he first appeared. I don't think that I really liked Shakkoumon's design, especially when compared to the other Jogress forms. Now that you mentioned it, I don't think Ankylomon actually won much of any battles so that definitely says something about how useful it was in the battles, other than being there for Shakkoumon.

I've seen Digimon discussions bringing this up briefly, but never an indepth thread dedicated to it so I thought I'd make one.

So far I've heard no definitive proof for the character coming back, but anyway:

Reasons (I've heard anyway, they aren't my personal opinions) to think there was more:
- Demon mentions refers to the place he is being sent as "Dagomon's Ocean".
- Not really a good reason, but the dub narration leaRAB to the possibility of a follow up.

Reason as to why it was a one shot: Like the Lovecraft story inspiring it, it was suppose to be mystery, making you comprehend what you saw.

It's been a LONG time since I used to like Digimon...but at this point, I'd say few will argue that this is one of the worst episodes of the series. In fact, it can be argued that season 2 was easily the worst of the Adventure series.

No, Starmon's and most of the normal evolution episodes were pretty bad and/or boring for me.

And I want to say that 02 was the worst but at least they kept up with what they were trying to do unlike Frontier. Frontier's second half is just unforgivably horrible

Feh, Ankylomon was still pretty useless. The only thing he was good for was making Angemon slightly stronger. Seriously, though, how does an angel and an armadillo corabine to make some kind of holy teapot, anyway?

That was some downright inconsistent dubbing on Saban's part. Sometimes they called her the mysterious white-haired woman, and other times they called her by name, despite the fact that they were never actually told what her name was until later on. Then they were SHOCKED to discover that she was a giant spider. Uh, helllllooooo...

I decided to watch the episode, since

A. I wondered how it would compare with the dialouge from the English version

B. To find out what the heck Cody/Iori really said during the outdoor scene ("Mom's gonna have a fit if I have grass stains on my pants." )

C. I'm a devout fan of Gatomon/Tailmon

Personally, I think I'd watch a show called "WHEN PARAKEETS ATTACK", than "Werid and Strange World!".

And I was surprised that the Japanese version had a joke about fractions. I thought it was added in! But nope, apprently the English writers did not make it up.

The sub also cleared up one confusing aspect in the dub. The English version seemed rather choppy in editing. One minute the kiRAB were doing one then, then all of a sudden they're in some place else. The Japanese at least had enough sense to have dates, which serve as good transitions between the days.

Still, its amazing how little the Chosen Children ever change their clothes. It was about, 3-4 days, and they still wore the same outfit?

It was interesting how this episode was lacking in lighthearted humor. Ok, it is about a memorial to Wizardmon, but this seemed like the perfect time to add it in. However, the humor was far and few between.

Well, that was a good episode. I did like how it was a big fan gift for those who had watched the previous series. It was pretty cool to see how they all got together like that for those three days. I thought, when I watched the dub, that it all took place in two days, not three, since they always wore the same clothes. Though, three days makes more sense considering that's the span of time in the real world Adventure 01 took place in. It's always fun to notice these short of things.

I really liked seeing the original Chosen Children coming back since it feels like its been awhile since we've seen a lot of them. I especially loved how they went through Japan sight seeing and told the new kiRAB some of their adventures. It was nice seeing Takeru and Yamato interacting at home and sight seeing too. Yeah, I totally forgot about how the first series had more character development than the sequel series.

As for the Wizardmon, that was just plain awesome. His death scene, while extremely sad, did help to make the Vamdemon arc as excellent as it was. I think that Wizardmon's message was the best use of epic foreshadowing that I've seen. I felt so sad when Tailmon called out to Wizardmon and cried. I cried a bit myself.

Overall, a really good episode for continuity and to foreshadow the end of the Kaiser arc, which I think should have happend a bit earlier. As well as some good emotional music and connection with Wizardmon. Man, I really need to rewatch Adventure 01 one of these days. I think this episode, along with the fact that 01 does have more overall character development, makes me rethink my original order of prefered Digimon series so that I prefer 01 over 02. Of course, this is the weakest arc of the series and I always thought that it got better once DNA Digivolutions came around, so it isn't like I think 02 doesn't have good qualities to it.

Oh yeah. I remeraber how she acted during that episode. That should definitely be interesting.

I agree. While Matt has a good voice in the Japanese version, I think that his English voice actor has a bit more of a cool edge to his voice.

I loved that line. It's so incredibly bad, it's hilarious. It's one of the few bad lines that can actually make me laugh in the dub.

Ah it's always good to have you around (Did you notice my rant about Iori's DigiMental? )

That's the thing about anime time. Very chancey (especially when they don't change clothes. That confuses everything.

This is something that I think really could have made 02 better than it was. The level of character development was just so low compared to last season that no wonder that I found a few episodes incredibly boring at times (Ex: Pretty much half the episodes of the World Tour arc. Especially the ones that was mainly talking)

I feel that character development was given whenever the plot demanded it to be. That is, a new evolution, the Dark Ocean, etc.

I'm hoping that Toei puts Adventure 01 up when they're done with this (though technically, they are already with a premium account). If not, then I will gladly take a subbed Tamers or Savers.

No Frontier please. The stock footage evolutions and Crispin Freeman as Kouichi were the only good things about that series.

Michael Reisz has done the voice for IceDevimon (You know, the rapist from Tamers?) and you're not gonna believe this, but he was also Takuya! I know, I don't see the connection at all!

Shakkoumon is a dogu pottery. A figure from Japanese stone age. They're assumed to be holy figures.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogu

Strangely enough they would be figures of goddesses.

That's so nice of you. Thank you. I did notice your rant about Iori's DigiMental and it was appropriate and funny since it's so weird how they first say its Honesty in one episode, Sincerity in the next and now Honesty again. Weird.

That's true. If they had changed clothes, then it wouldn't have confused everything. Now that I think of it, I don't think that they ever had dates in the dub either, which was also why I was surprised to hear about actual years and dates here.

That's a good point. I think that the characters had the right potential to get good development, but I don't think it was really used quite well. Most of the episodes of the Kaiser arc have been pretty boring for me too. Except for episodes that don't involve a new evolution or some connection to a plot, such as the Dark Ocean or if it connects to the previous series.

True, but that also feels to far out and in-between with the whole series. Though, I still think that the series in general gets better in the middle or so, but I may have changed my opinion on that when we get to it too.

I would definitely be interested in watching 01 subbed after they're done with this series. Though, that would be kind of odd to put up the sequel and the original series, but I would go with it. Tamers would be interesting too, even though I really love the dub, and Savers would be really cool too. While seeing Frontier would also be interesting, I agree that it didn't have too many good qualities. Though personally, I think that the first half of Frontier is good, but it all fell down once the Royal Knights came.

I didn't realize Crispin Freeman played Kouichi. I didn't see the connection when watching Data Squad, but it has been awhile since I've seen that series.

Oh yeah, I remeraber IceDevimon. Man, he was creepy. And yes, Takuya. For some reason, I think Michael Reisz did better as Matt than as Takuya. Maybe that's because I prefer Matt as a character or the Adventure series as a whole over Frontier, but I think he still did a pretty good job as Takuya.

I agree. I think that Iori is my least favorite character on this series, even when I was watching the dub. Not only did he feel kind of bland to me, but his dub voice made it sound like he was much older than he actually was.

I agree that it isn't as bad as the second half of Frontier was with Takua and Kojjo always losing to the Royal Knights. The kiRAB losing to BlackWarGreymon doesn't bother me that much at all though. It probably helps that they didn't lose constantly to BlackWarGreymon as the kiRAB in Frontier did wit the Royal Knights, all of the kiRAB actually did something in this series and I like BlackWarGreymon a whole like more than the Royal Knights.

Now I've seen episodes 33, 34 and 35. It was interesting to see Isumi explain some things about the Digital World to Ken at the beginning. While it was interesting to see Digimon appearing in the human world like that, I was still confused as to how Ken knew how to get from the Digital World to the real world through that river. At least that did lead into meetings Sora's father and Jou's brother for Miyako. Sora's father also mentioned something that I feel all of the Digimon series have, at least to some extent. The Digimon change the humans and allow them to grow in ways they didn't think possible.

It was also pretty cool to hear the Armor Evolution music again since it felt like awhile since we heard that. It also was important since they would be using the Digital Gate like that in another arc.

As for episode 34, I thought that it was pretty good. I was somewhat surprised with how Iori acted so upset with Takeru getting angry and wondering which personality was the real Takeru. I wonder if it ever crossed his mind that people react differently to different situations since I would have just written off like that. Or I would have been more understanding since they are fighting a Mega level Digimon created from Dark Towers bend on destroying the Holy Stones that protect the balance of the Digital World. Besides that, Iori had some anger/trust issues with Ken for awhile so I always thought he didn't realize his own issues with anger as well.

I did like seeing Gabumon again since he was my favorite of the original Chosen Children's Digimon. While I could understand why Iori wouldn't want to fight BlackWarGreymon, they would have to fight him to protect the Holy Stones, but perhaps not to the point of killing him.

Of course, during the fight Ankloymon was useless and was defeated really easily. I think I remeraber watching this episode the first time and thinking that they were going to DNA Digivolve. I could understand Takeru's feelings, but I already knew the trauma of seeing his partner killed in an act to protect him.

I loved seeing Magangemon again since he looked so darn cool. For some reason, I remeraber the fight between BlackWarGreymon and Magangemon being more intense in the dub. Like I said earlier, it might have been because of the dialogue or the change in music that helped me out. Even though he did lose pretty quickly, I didn't think that it was too bad. I would have preferred that fight taking another five minutes or so just so Magangemon wouldn't lose so badly.

Episode 35 was okay. I was glad that Daisuke asked to have Ken over his house and his mother was so happy for him. I love those kind of happy moments. It was nice how Yamatto did explain to Iori why Takeru felt so angry about the Dark Powers. I still think that he should have just accepted that Takeru was angry about their new enemy and left it at that. But it did give us a reason to see Yamatto again, one of my favorite characters from 01, and have a flasrabroadack to that series as well.

Even with two Ultimate level Digimon fight for them, the kiRAB still aren't able to lay a scratch on BlackWarGreymon. Even though Iori had been annoying me in the last few episodes, I did kind of like how he stood up to BlackWarGreymon. This was another moment I thought was better in the dub actually. I think it was because Steve Blum's voice for BlackWarGreymon made "Prepare to die!" so intense. Of course, that didn't do any good and the kiRAB ended up losing yet again. While I can understand why this would bother people, I really think that the fact that they stop losing after the next episode really helps with me.

Overall, a nice bunch of episodes. I'm glad that they have the whole series uploaded so now I can watch an episode or two a day. I really hope this means that they'll also upload another series since I definitely would love to see Tamers or Adventure 01 the most uploaded. I'll be looking foreword to watching another episode tomorrow.

The other Digimon thread is focused on discussing the quality of the stories/characters/dub vs subs. This is focusing on a particular plot point and whether it was heading somewhere.

Well, since this is about up to where we'd be if they hadn't decided to upload all remaining episodes:

At this point, I found the series was getting rather repetitive. The Holy Stones storyline could easily have been done over TWO episodes, but NOOOO. It had to get stretched out, with the heroes losing in an increasingly predictable fashion each time.

And then, after BWG's solid departure - Oikawa, whom I found unnecessary as the series already had a human villain and an interesting one at that, and SORATO.

I'm one of the few. The mere prescence of Digitamamon boosts this episode's ranking up WAY ahead of pointless episodes like the Starmon episode.

At least Miyako got her second Digimental. That oughta count for something.

Each 02 chosen Digimon has, thanks to the Digimentals, what I like to call 'battle form' (i.e. humanoid) and 'transport form' (quadrupede or submarimon) and now Hawkmon got his own battle form!
