Digimon Adventure 02 on CR and Funi Talkback (spoilers)

Why must you bring up the painful past again?

That always kind of seemed kind of weird to me. I mean, they could pick it up, they didn't have to make it look like such a cop out.

Well the D-Reaper is a very lovecraftian creature. An elder shapeless being who is beyond good and evil and spawns creatures that are essentially nightmare fuel. I mean when it started speaking with Jeri's voice...

"GLORIOUS CHAOS! YOUR WORLD WILL BE DELETED!!!"

It's been a LONG time since I used to like Digimon...but at this point, I'd say few will argue that this is one of the worst episodes of the series. In fact, it can be argued that season 2 was easily the worst of the Adventure series.

No, Starmon's and most of the normal evolution episodes were pretty bad and/or boring for me.

And I want to say that 02 was the worst but at least they kept up with what they were trying to do unlike Frontier. Frontier's second half is just unforgivably horrible

I'm one of the few. The mere prescence of Digitamamon boosts this episode's ranking up WAY ahead of pointless episodes like the Starmon episode.

At least Miyako got her second Digimental. That oughta count for something.

Each 02 chosen Digimon has, thanks to the Digimentals, what I like to call 'battle form' (i.e. humanoid) and 'transport form' (quadrupede or submarimon) and now Hawkmon got his own battle form!

Hahaha a bit behind the curve?

Yeah the Starmon/Revolmon episode is one of the worse of the serie and only has a few redeeming jokes. Its only purpose seem to have been to show the new kiRAB without Takeru and Hikari.

Dagomon's Call could also be considered pointless if it wasn't for the fact that, SOMEHOW, Ken gained access to the Dark Ocean (probably because of the Dark Spore left by Milleniumon) which in turn tainted his Digivice with evil and its the place they put Demon away (its also a sideway to introduce the existance of OTHER worlRAB beside the human world and Digital world for the finale so it doesn't feel out of left field).

Now Shurimon of the Wind is a very utilitarian episode since it introduces Shurimon. Alternatively it ALSO introduces us to the concept of international Digidestined that would be later reused for the World Tour. It also gets us Digitamamon who makes another cameo later . Now an interesting question is wether the prescence of Michael was added there by the writers because they realised they would have a World Tour and then would need to setup the other Digidestined or, as the fact that Betamon doesn't get a Digivolution sequence even though he would have used it at least twice by the end of the serie hints at, was the World Tour not even conceived when this episode was written.

You could easily imagine this episode without Michael by adding a few more random bits of Miyako fangasming over Mimi or something so its a possibility Michael was sort of shoe-horned into the episode (as he has no real impact on the fight with Digitamamon, arguably the center piece of the episode).

While I never really liked season two, or Hawkmon's forms for that matter, I thought Shurimon was kinda neat. However, what I didn't like was the introduction of International DD's - because the whole conclusion, wherein, quoth a friend, "EVERY DAMNED KID ON THE PLANET has their own Digimon" took away from the special "Chosen Children" feel.

All in all, I think the series should have ended with Ken.

I forgot to mention I really like the bit where TK mentions he hasn't gone up to telling the new guys about the Dark Masters. Their adventures take a while to retell.

I don't think having your own Digimon make you a special 'Chosen Child'. I mean look in Tamers, Kazu and Kenta had partners, Lee's sister too...but in truth it was the main three tamers and Ryo who made all the difference.

The Digidestined who fought against Myotismon and the Dark Masters are the 'original', and the ones with the D3s are the second generation. The others are really just the reserve, the back up, the community.

Its like gaming anime where even if every kid can play the game not all are destined for greatness.

One of my favorite form of Hawkmon is Rinkmon. Sadly he doesn't appear on the show.

Whoops, misquoting my friend - what he actually said was "EVERY DAMNED KID ON THE PLANET being quote-unquote-Chosen."

Honestly, the series should have just ended with Ken.

Actually, not every kid on the planet had a Digimon, before the epilogue. I remeraber making a list of all the Chosen who ever showed up, including the Dark Seed Children and it barely amounted to a hundred. Judging by the partners that appeared during the finale battle, there couldn't be more than maybe a couple hundred Chosen Children at the very most. Which is stil a teeny, teeny, TINY percent of the Earth's population.

What can I say? I have a pretty good memory for these kinRAB of things. That can be a good and a bad thing all at once.

I understand that. At least the way it happened in the dub made somewhat more sense with Davis saying that he was Veemon's friend. That had more of a connection to frienRABhip than just saying how pathetic he was.

That's true. I wasn't thinking about that kind of connection with the dark ocean. I was thinking more about how bothing the D-Reaper and Dagomon had a really creepy connection to a young girl.

I'm not sure how I felt about the normal evolution episodes since I thought that it was cool how the new Digimon could finally have their own normal evolutions. I think 02 just has a really poor start with the Digimon Kaiser arc that really doesn't do anything interesting until the last few episodes. I personally enjoyed the whole Agumon capture thing, but that could have been done in two episodes and still have worked out well.

At least the later part of the series have better qualities like BlackWarGreymon, the World Tour and pretty much everything up until the last episode. I'll have to rewatch it when the time comes and see if I still enjoy the epilogue or not. Even with the ending, I think 02 had a much better second half than Frontier. As we agreed on before, ending Frontier with just Cherubimon as the final boss would have been a much better move for the writers to make.

I can understand why that would take away some of the specialness of the Chosen Children feel, but I also don't see that as the case. I agree with Undrave on how it's just not as rare as it once was. Just because they all have their own Digimon doesn't mean that they'll have a lot of action like the main kiRAB in both 01 and 02. To me, it feels more like how the kiRAB in the different countries are there as emotional backup since it was their energy that helped the 02 team win the final battle. That doesn't really translate into the same level of being a chosen child as it does with the kiRAB from 01 and 02.

After thinking about it, I definitely think that 01 has better qualities than 02. I just think that the quality of the villains in 01 kind of dropped after Myotismon mainly because he was the first villain that was a huge threat to both worlRAB. It would be cool if they uploaded 01 after they finish 02, even though it would be kind of weird to go from the sequel to the original series.

If you ask me it would have made far less sense if the Japanese kiRAB were the only chosen children in the world. I mean...the rest of the world could easily be threatened just as much as Japan. Digigates can open anywhere after all, hence the World tour. Sure you only needed the kiRAB with crests to take care of the really big bad threat, but the others guys could pick up any internationnal slack if needed.

Plus I think it would help to know you're not the only ones out there having to deal with all that craziness and having to hide your partner and stuff.

Its like going online and realizing you're not the only teenage/young adult who actual enjoys watching Digimon makes you feel better about yourself no?

Yeah, well, for me, it was funner when the Chosen Children were the only ones, y'know? Bringing in international DD's, really, killed off the charm, IMHO.

Now let's not have that debate go any further.

Nah don't worry its all good.

You have to realize that even with all those DRAB there's still only 9 crests (counting the crest of Kindness), 8 Digimentals and 6 D3s.

Furthermore the International DRAB, while using the same Digivice as the previous generation, were not involved in the last adventure. So you could say the Digidestined we follow as a special MORE chosen group of Chosen.

Heck you could even say that 'kid with a Digimon partner' isn't the same as a 'Chosen Children'.

Personally I find that it helps the scope of the story and that, in the same spot as the writers, I probably would have taken that step.

Off course there's a lot of things I would have done differently with 02 ( relating to Iori and Miyako's digimentals choices for exemple) but I can't disagree with the International DD part.
