Difficulty Installing Adobe Programs (Photoshop etc.)?

I've been trying to install a lot of the Adobe Programs lately that I need, but I've come up with a few problems.

Firstly, whenever I click the setup.exe, usually, it'll come up with the installation window, but half the time it doesn't even come up.
Secondly, when it DOES come up, it usually says that I have to close Internet Explorer first, in order for the installation to continue. I don't have Internet Explorer open, so I try to close IE by going to Task Manager and ending the process of IE, right? It's suppose to just end itself, but instead, whenever I click End Process--it pops up again on the Task Manager and I can never get to continue with my installation! It is highly frustrating.

So I'd like to know
1. why is it that the install window doesn't come up half of the time?
2. How can I just end IE? It keeps reoccurring in the task manager and won't seem to "end" itself or stop running.

Oh, I've been trying to install CS 3 version of most of the programs, since those are the ones I'm used to and I'm using a Toshiba laptop, it's about 4 years old. And further notice is that the DVD-R drive is broken, it reads but sometimes it doesn't--and I can't burn anything so that is another problem.

Help! Please, I really, really need to install these programs.

try copying the programs from the disc to your desktop and installing them from there.

as for ie being kept open you probably have got automatic updates turned on
not that it should make a difference to you installing anything.

other than that the only other thing i think of is malware is using your internet connection and sending out what you are doing something like a keylogger maybe.
