Difficulty in swallowing

I have had LPR for some time- several years now! When I was diagnosed I was told I had a hiatus hernia too. My main symptom is the cough/throat clearing which drives me (& my family) mad! I don't suffer from chest pain or heart burn at all really but lately I have been having trouble swallowing- especially at night when I'm trying to get some sleep- amid the coughing! The only other annoying symptom I have is nausea which comes and goes.

Does anyone know if the swallowing difficulty is part of the LPR?- & if so what can one do about it? I have been on Nexium for about 3 years now but it doesn't seem to be working at all lately. Thanks for any advise! ;)

Yep...that's part of the disease. Don't know what the solution is. I keep a glass of water next to by bed and it helps me swallow when I can't otherwise. Mine comes and goes. I haven't had that problem in several years...until last week when it returned.

I hear that people can sometimes develop strictures or scar tissue due to the acid and the ENT doctor has to dilate the tissues around your throat to facilitate swallowing again. I would also recommend going back to the doctor to see if another PPI may work better for you.

Thank you both so much for replying! :) Perhaps I should go and see my doctor & get another referral to see my Gastro specialist! I haven't seen him for nearly 3 years & he did tell me to come back if I was worried.

I have no difficulty swallowing food really- just my own saliva- particularly if I'm lying down. ;)
