Differences between the effects of floods/tsunamis of modern day and of history?

My assignment is to compare and contrast the differences between the effects of floods or tsunamis in modern day situations and situations in history. For example, you can say like in history, some people thought they were being punished by God during a major flood. I need to be specific like when and where that belief took place. Right now I am in need of historic examples in case you're kind enough to help me. Thanks for your help =)
