Difference between a 1997 Chevy S10 vin # x and w?

the x and the w are generally the type on engine that is in the truck. you can usually find it by going to a car history report site and type in the vin and it will usually tell you whether it is w or x. you also might be able to find it by looking under the hood and on top of the metal strip above the radiator it should say
 
whats the difference and how can i tell if i have the x or w? my vin number has an x in the middle of the number but im not sure if thats what i should be looking for. i have a 1997 Chevy S10 pickup LS.
