Dieting in a different culture without offending anyone?

hey,
so im an exchange student this year as as a result of that ive put on a little weight.. i would normally diet by eating what i need and exercising a lot but i live with a family in which the mom cooks the meals and decides what you eat and i don't have any time to exercise because i now have to travel over an hour to school everyday and i wake up early and get home late.
any suggestions on how i could eat healthier while living in a family who eats pretty fatty foods (its the culture) or any ideas how i can say no to the food without being rude??
also, any tips on how i can exercise during the day without getting too overheated?
i dont eat that much to begin with. usually for dinner i have 2 pieces of bread. and ive always got food in my room. from granola bars to apples. i can buy any foods that i need to refrigerate because i dont want to have to explain why i bought my own food. its really awkward living here and i dont want it to be worse. it would be really hard explaining becasue of the language barrier (my german is really bad..)

I think your best option here would be portion control! That way you are eating what she puts in front of you, but only eat like 1/3 of it. Is there any way you can keep healthy snacks in your room? Also...you could try doing jump rope movements in your room before bed and when you wake up. Jumping rope is one of the best forms of cardio you can do as it works your whole body, but since you don't have a jump rope...just do the movements.

Well....I don't know how meals are served there, but if you're in the kitchen while the mom puts the food on your plate, just simply state "that's fine" once she's put a certain amount on your plate so she doesn't totally fill it up. Or if she serves you your plate at the table, just don't finish all the food. Or if you serve yourself, don't put so much on your plate.

Or you could just tell her you want to go on a diet. Just casually mention it to her..."I think I'm gonna go on a diet since I don't have much time to exersize. Do you mind if I buy myself some healthy diet food?" Do you think she'd really be offended by that?
