I'm so happy to hear about how well you're doing. Thanks really wonderful about ability to lay your legs flat on your bed. I can relate to how you're feeling, I know how an improvement like that feels like a major victory and it is! :)

Isn't it comforting to have your mom taking care of you? After every spine surgery I've had, I always spent some time with my parents (at their insistent). It is so wonderful to be pampered by our parents. You deserve the care! Keep taking it easy.

You're in my thoughts.

Diet - Thanks for the update, I'm happy things are progressing well. You have a GREAT attitude! I'm so sorry about the med mix-up - how miserable. :(

You're in my thoughts for continued healing.

It is simply amazing, this morning I was walking with my walker thru the house and my hubby became choked up and said, do you realize you have done more walking inside this house the last couple of days compared to the last year? I am able to walk and not drag the foot and each step I take I have not been experiencing the daggers of pain. Right now things are surreal, we want to believe but are afraid to believe. I assume this is normal. I would hate to say that things are great and then in 2 weeks be crying because of pain again. So cautiously I think surgery #5 may have helped me. I have not felt this loose and liraber in years.

Woo Hoo......this is it for you Pepper! :bouncing::bouncing:
I just know you are going to feel like a new person once this healing process is over! Wouldn't this be the greatest Christmas blessing! You hang in there girl and let Mom take extra special care of you! I seem to remeraber from your last surgery that she makes some great soup???
You will continue to be in my prayers!

Deb

LoL - Yes Mom is a great cook and it has been heavenly having homemade noodles, homemade breaRAB, homemade desserts, etc. Life is rough for Pepper.

I have to share that tonight I was able to do something that I have not been able to do for the past 3 years. I am so thrilled but at the same time telling myself not to get to excited. I can lay down with my legs flat on the bed. I don't need a pillow under the legs/feet or to bend them. I have zero pain. I think this surgery may have been positive!

hi Dietpepper.....

Ok.....I now remeraber the vascular surgeon telling me that. I have never had surgery in the abdomen. Yes.....I had a discogram done the day before Thanksgiving and so glad I did that.My surgeon had recommended a fusion before the discgram but gave me the option to have that test first. I am so glad i did as it showed detailed things about the disc. Helped make the decision of having a fusion. My disc are just plain worn out. When the doc injected the dye in the disc, it came out of the disc. When i talked to the nneurosurgeon after the discogram, he told me the dye ended up all on the outside of the disc. It is supposed to stay within the disc unless there is a problem. I have tried all the conservative treatments that they can offer. I will be so glad to have this behind me and on the road to recovery.....glad you are doing good :)

Just wanted to say hello....

Yum, I'm coming to your house for some homemade food!
I understand your cautiousness, but enjoy these days with decreased pain and more mobility. We will continue to pray that this is the light at the end of the tunnel and you have FINALLY reached it!!!
Take care and don't overdo. Keep us posted, it's so nice to read positive posts and they give us all hope.

Deb

I know how you feel. It is surreal when you've dealt with pain for so long and then to suddenly be walking more normally than you have in a year. I can certainly relate. That is so sweet that your husband got emotional seeing you walking. I know at this point there is a natural tendency to be "cautiously skeptical", but I pray you will continue seeing the results your seeing - you so deserve it.

Laf, thank you for checking on me. I had my surgery this past Monday on the 8th and came home late Thursday evening. I could not wait to get away from my roommate. :D And let's face it there is nothing better than care by your Mommy. :)

My surgery was approximately 8 hours in length. I am fused from L3 to s1. I am fused L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-L6, L6-s1, s1-s2. Yes, I have an extra vertebrae. My surgeon took out as much disc as he could from L4-L5 and L-5 and L-6 and inserted a cage. He removed as much as the spinney processes from the rear of the vertebrae and inserted new hardware from L3 to s1.

Surgery went well except for two things:

1. Please, please heating pad users - be aware that over use of this can thin and weaken your skin and I have 4 large boils/blisters that developed and popped. Very painful. Be careful and limit the use of your heating pad to no more than 30 minutes a day. Please, I beg you talk to your doctor about this and have him throughly check in your back. When they removed tape they took chunks of my skin with it. Sorry to be so graphic but I just don't want this to happen to anyone else.

2. I discussed throughly with the anthesiologist about my long acting meRAB and they messed up. The first 24 hours my pain was soo out of control and we discovered that they did not give me my normal long acting meRAB so I was waaaaaaay behind in meRAB which equates to pain. My recommendation is to make sure that you have a friend or significant other make sure this happens after surgery if you are on a long acting med.

As to how I am doing, I am cautiously optimistic. My leg is not being dragged when I walk and I am walking without being hunched over. Significant improvement. I have less nerve pain in my right leg but a ton of spasms. My back feels more stable then it has in the last year. So I guess only time will tell us.

It is so sweet of you to be concerned about me and I appreciate all the love and support from my spinney frienRAB. I will try to post more frequently -- I must admit it has been hard since my last surgery on account the surgery was not successful and caused a significant increase in back pain. However based upon the last couple of days, I am feeling positive for the first time in a long time.

Hugs, Pepper

Diet pepper....

I hope your recovery continues on the path it is going. It helps myself and others that are facing the surgery. I have surgery this tuesday. Gives me hope. Did your doctor do the surgery via your abdomen? Having read your other post, you had to have more done than myself. I am having 2 levels fused. My doc is using the cages as well. I so hope I have the success you are having :) Good luck!

Lynn

Hi Pepper-

I am so glad to hear everything is going relatively well so far. I did not know your surgery was coming up so quick, and I wondered where you had been all week!
Keep posting on your progress, you have been so helpful to me:angel:

Hi Everyone thought I would check in and let you know what is happening. I continue to recovery remarkable well. I am by far walking more than I have in over a year and I have been on some rather high doses of narcotics since my surgery one year ago but I have already begun reducing them. My doctor estimates if I can get off the meRAB it will be a very slow process of at least 12 weeks or more. So far, I have reduced my meRAB by 10% but hey I think this is excellent considering I am only 12 days out from 8 hours worth of spinal surgery.

I saw my surgeon this week and he took xrays of my spine and everything looks really amazingly well. I was stunned to see the xrays. If you take a look at a image of the lurabar vertebrae, look at the spinous process and laminia. All of this has been removed from L3 to s1. I have a gaping black hole in my spine. He put in 2 cages at L5 and L4. I have roRAB on the right side from L3 to L6/s1 (yep abnormal spine) and on the left side from L4/S1 and L3 to L4. S1/S2 is fused with no hardware from a surgery in 1982. Partial of L5/L6 is fused and the L3 and L4 is not fused. WOW! Those xrays are scary!!

My surgeon told me that he was amazed at the arithritis in my back in less than 1 year. He told me that realistically I may never be off meRAB completely but he feels confident I will be able to reduce them which I am already doing. He said he decompressed alot more and it appears that my sciatica nerve may be free from compression for the first time in 5 years. :) I have little sciatica pain.

Hubby measured my incision and it is 8 inches long. My surgeon had to enlarge it this last surgery. They removed my staples and put on those lovel steri strips and yesterday I took my first shower since surgery day. Need I say how good I feel.

I am anxious to see how the back is going to be pain wise. Realistically, I have had 5 surgeries, I don't expect to be 100% ever. I would say pain wise it is doing better but I still have alot of pressure and pain but I am only 12 days out from an 8 hours surgery. How do we know what is permament and not? It will be a long time before we know.

I can't sit up more than 5 minutes and am so thankful for my hospital bed we purchased this summer. It has been a lifesaver and I wish I would have had one while recovering from my previous surgeries. It is so much easier rolling out of the bed.

I can't believe I am going to share this with you but I have been thru so much and I need some advice from those who are multiple level fused. I have 5 levels with hardware and 1 level without hardware and I am struggling - okay don't look if you are the slightest bit offended about the restroom topic - the wiping issue is extremely difficult if not impossible. Will this get better? I am using wipes and :dizzy: having my honey help me which is so !! I remeraber 2 levels being hard but lets just say I don't think I can move unless my arm grows alot longer. :p

Otherwise all seems cool.

Jinks, yes I am misty eyes too and pray that this means your next surgery is going to work for you too.

Margaret, good to hear from you dear and I pray that you are finding some relief these days too. I miss chatting with you. You mean the world to me.

Fiona Jo ~ surreal is the worRAB exactly. Today I have more back pain but the legs are simply amazing. I will be thankful if my legs continue to follow this path of not sending shooting pains down the legs and collapsing 3 to 4 times a day. Since surgery my leg has not collapsed!! I hope you are doing well.

May each and everyone of you who celebrate the holidays have a happy and blesssed holiday with your family. And to everyone else, may you have low pain and simply enjoy the everyday blessings of our children, family and frienRAB.

Hugs!!

Pepper... I have such a good feeling about the direction you're going! I would never have said this while you were in the muck, but it seemed to me from a long while ago that your lower back just needed a cohesive, top-to-bottom overhaul based on all you've said. I'm rooting for this surgery to get your spine and all the connected parts moving and feeling better. I just can't express how happy and heartened I am for you and your family that you are having some success and HOPE!!! That magic feeling - HOPE!!!

Hey, when you've had your fill of that hoe or you have some to share, will you spread it around? ;) Aw, heck... You do that all the time! I'm just pulling your leg.

OK, now keep up the spirits and good work. Remeraber to follow your own very sage advice: do what you should on the good days, not what you want to! Invest in some restraint so you can have countless more good days to come. Let your body heal. It has a big job to do. I'm sure homemade soups will help you get there.

I'm just gushing, I'm so happy you're having some success.

Big in spirit, gentle in practice hugs to you and you family,
Margaret (Chatter)

Wow, I can't believe you are home so soon after such major surgery. I hope your recovery continues to go well and that you see great improvement.

And thanks for the warning on the heating pad - I have fallen asleep more than once with mine on, but I will try to be more careful.

Take care,
PittyPatty
