... now I'm not making this up!!!!

Did you know Abraham Lincoln actually didn't "like" blacks and would have been unhappy if not appalled that one was president?

It's true! and I'm not being racist, its the truth. you may have a hard time finding it but if you look in a detailed biography about Lincoln it will be there.

And you liberals praise him for freeing the slaves...

it was as Obama would say "politicing" (doing what was best for your political career rather than what you truly believe)... and Obama did say that.

So did you Liberals know that?... or were you still going by the middle school teaching of Abe Lincoln
by the way I'm an Independent so the fact that he was a republican doesn't bother me in the least
Yes he was a republican, but the republican party back then was a lot more liberal than it is today. so Abe would probably be either like McCain (a somewhat liberal republican) or a Democrat.
I just found it funny that people compared Obama to Lincoln when in reality Lincoln probably wouldn't have like him.

big deal, may not of liked them but saw them as human and equal to him. lots of cons fought for civil rights, but go up to any idiot flying the rebal flag today and ask what party they are. i bet you 99% would be anything but a democrat. cons hate minorities, beat thier women, and think that all non-cons are commie pinko FaGs, believe that torture works

yes i know that. i also know that fdr put the japs in concentration camps. get over it

Yes, I think everyone realizes that. Racism was the norm in the 1860's... Lincoln was normal in that regard, though he was very progressive for his time.

Abe was very open with his struggle over this issue, up unitl he signed the bill he stated he was unsure what was best for the country.

Back then the common perception was that Monkeys came first, Blacks came quickly thereafter and Whites were far superior to blacks. That is why the monkey moniker towards blacks is always considered racist, but not towards whites.

It was simply a sign of the times and yes, Lincoln would be considered a racist by today's standards, closer associated with white supremacist.

But that does not change the fact that he has rightfully earned his place in history as one of our best.

.

Lincoln actually never freed the slaves, only some of them. His emancipation proclamation only freed the slaves in the rebel southern states. The proclamation did not apply to the 5 slave states in the north - Yes that's right, the north had slaves too.

The slaves were actually freed in December 1865 with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The 13th Amendment freed the slaves in New Jersey, Delaware, Missouri and Kentucky. Maryland's slaves were freed in 1864 by the State legislature. These facts are usually overlooked in modern, revisionist history books which give Lincoln all the credit.

BTW - Lincoln was a Republican and the Democratic party was the party of slavery.

Are you implying that it's only liberals that believed freeing the slaves was a good thing?

Lincoln didn't hate blacks - he didn't think much of them for the most part, but he did hold respect for those that proved themselves. He was friends and held respect for Frederick Douglas, even inviting him to the White House.

The freeing of the slaves WAS a mostly political move, but it was still an important one, and Lincoln was still ahead of his times in terms of race.

And what the hell do liberals have to do with this anyways?

Since Lincoln is dead and the times then are totally different than now I really do not think he would be appalled.

And?? Yes, we knew Lincoln wasn't for 'equality'. Did you want to be the party of the 19th century, or the one of the 21st? The puritans weren't all that nice or cordial to the indians either....does that mean we should discount EVERY single thing they stood for, based on some aspects that we wholeheartedly disagree with?
