My husband and I got married and moved into our apartment 9 months ago. Before this I lived across the hall in the same apartment for one year. Our landlord is older/elderly and lost her husband two years ago. She was doing pretty bad for awhile and got behind in the mortgage and bills. We lost laundry capabilities, had trouble with the mail being delivered, and lost our snow plow guy. We offered to pay for a new plow but she did not want that. We also had problems with the trash because more people moved in and we couldn't fit everything into one barrel - and she could not afford an extra barrel from the trash service. To top things off, I have had a sore throat all summer and bad headaches. We recently found out that we live across the river from a waste incinerator and this is probably making me sick.
The landlord has recently come around with the help of her family. Her oldest daughter moved in to help and her grandson moved in too. They have never given us trouble but they drink and smoke pot, and this makes us feel uncomfortable because we don't do this. We were not very trusting of her daughter because she has a different temperament than the mom. She seems more preoccupied with money.
We found a new apartment that is in a nice neighborhood with landlords that keep up the property. The rent is a little less. We took the new apartment but feel horrible. We don't want her to lose her house because of us. We feel like we bailed out on her when things were getting better. It feels like a selfish decision and maybe a mistake.
Do you think we made the right decision?
