got in common with minorities? that's what my English teacher said... but i don't understand it?

Frankly, I think your teacher is a fool.

Racism comes from two sources - real and politically-charged.

Real: Anybody who lives in a town with a mix of races knows racism is real. They can see how whites and blacks treat each other.

Politically-charged - Contrary to what your teacher said, the media doesn't promote racism to keep whites from seeing what they have in common with minorities. The media, and typically liberal politicians, promote race hatred or "class warfare" because that strengthens and promotes their own power agenda. Politicians score big points by
claiming that Government needs to "help the minorities". In some cases, this is true, but frankly, in many cases it is not. No matter - promise to pass bills and policies that will funnel money into minority assistance, and you can guarantee pulling in large blocks of voters.

The media love to report on trouble, on the downtrodden, on the oppressed. So they love to make hay out of racial tension.
It sells newspapers.

Well I don't think it is the media, I think that it is poor whites themselves that have the need to think that they are better than black. Most know that high and middle class whites don't see them as equally so they are racist towards blacks so that they will get approval from their own people.

Racism is a self-perpetuating mental/psychological illness that is high contagious and can be contracted by persons from ages 0-120. It is not most commonly spread by means of radio, Television, or other forms of mass media. However, it can definitely spread sometimes merely by coming in contact with certain enablers (includes certain types of people). These enablers can really stir up racism in the body and mind of a human being. Yes, oftentimes, an individual may contract racism and it would just be there in their bodies dormant, but bring one of this enablers and it, the racism, becomes active and highly malignant. The media did not create this illness. In fact the origin or beginnings of this illness is unknown.

now as for poor whites having much in common with minorities, you perhaps may be right. However you should remember not all members of minority group are poor.
