It's true, a lot of people attacked her family, and it was wrong. But it wasn't liberal and it wasn't mainstream. It was wacky tabloids like The Sun and The Enquirer who said that Trig was not Sarah's but was actually Bristol's. Maybe some crazy liberal bloggers went overboard here and there, but that is not mainstream, and it doesn't represent the average liberal.
