Did the British Army suppress the war records of British miners serving in WWI?

Prior to the First Battle of the Somme in July 1916, the British began placing landmines under the German trenches. Footage of the first mine detonated at Beamont Hamel was filmed by Geoffrey Malins. Efforts to identify men who worked on the tunneling is frustrated because many of the 'sappers' were recruited from British coal mines and their war records indicate they were on Home Service. Is there evidence to support the idea that records were doctored to prevent alerting Germany to the tunneling efforts then underway?
