During the 2004 elections, John Kerry wore his purple hearts on his sleaves! Everybody was on Bush's case for only serving in the Air National Guard, while John Kerry was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran (supposedly). So where was Hillary Clinton nd Barak Obama while John McCain was in a POW camp? If Vietnam service was so important when John Kerry was running for president, why isn't Vietnam service important now that Clinton and Obama are running?

Barak Obama would have been too young to serve in Vietnam. He would have been twelve when the American combat units were withdrawn in 1973.

It seems to me that in the military you are taught to obey orders given to you without question. In some cases without even thinking for yourself. You learn a rigid, regimented way of doing things with little option for innovation or individual expression.

Are those the qualities you want in your political leaders?

I suggest not........

The Republicans made a bigger deal about Kerry's service than the Democrats did. (And the Democrats made a bigger deal out of Bush's service than the Republicans.)

Military service isn't really that important to being president. What is important is being someone who is willing to make sacrifices to themselves for the good of the nation. Those two still don't measure up to McCain in that regard, but it is a better yardstick--we don't want the military running the country, we want good people running things. Often veterans have proven themselves worthy, but so have others.

Neither one served in the Armed Forces. The military is a great place to learn the skills of leadership. Other people come to it by political route.
