The last couple of nights when I've returned from work (about midnight), I noticed something zipping across our garden path and disappering into the gravely bit (which covers a crack in our concrete path) when the security light came on. I stopped but couldn't see anything, but last night .... OMG!!!!! .... a saw 'it'. 'It' was a giant garden worm! It was at least 12 inchs long laying across the concrete and when the light came on, it disappered back into the little hole it was poking out of ... like a piece of spagetti being eaten!! I have never seen such a thing before!

It was def worm coloured ... not a snake ... and I am suprised at the length and the fact it reacted so quickly. It took a couple of seconds to go back into its hole.

Was it a worm?! Can anyone tell me about it?
Nope, wasn't a slow worm. I had one of those as a pet ... until my mum found out then I had to take it back to the pet shop lol!

Sounds like you saw a slow worm, not a worm, nor a snake, it's a legless lizard.
You can see it here:

Maybe it was one of these.

Giant Lob Worms

Giant Lob Worms, also known as Nightcrawlers and Dew Worms are popular in the fishing trade, and have become an excellent food source to the bird trade in recent years. They are an excellent source of moisture which is highly beneficial for sick or dehydrated birds.

Worms measure approximately 90-150mm in length.

It could have been a sloworm.
I saw one once and screamed thinking it was a snake.
They are harmless, and I believe a protected species.

it may have been a slow worm - but dont be misled by the name worm - for its mighty big for a worm
usual thing - started off as lizard reptile, lost its legs and now a snake/worm - will not harm you - leave well alone and admire it - for its bady beaten up in the wilderness

Probably a slow worm - have a look here http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/281.shtml. They are basically legless lizards and harmless (.... but I can vouch that they can give you quite a fright!!) :-)
