Did Freddie Prinze SR finish season 3 or did he die during filming?

I'm just wandering, because I'm watching all of the seasons of Chico And The Man and I noticed season 3 was until April of '77 and he passed in January of '77.
And I just want to know before I get half way through season 3 and him just disappear mid-season...
