The loans were, in fact, repaid early with interest. But don't expect that scenario this time. The only way Chrysler was able to accomplish that feet is by convincing the Federal government to buy thousands of Chrysler vehicles (mostly K-cars) as a way of ensuring the deal would be successful. Also, US labor costs were somewhat competitive against most countries with the ability to mass produce and market vehicles globally. This is no longer true. China has labor cost that are a tiny fraction of US and European labor costs. Even India is throwing it's name in the hat with it's new line of Ta Ta cars. Starting price for the Indian street legal version? $2500. It's a very different world.
