Chrysler corp (Dodge) just announced this morning that it's increasing car production to catch up to demand because it 's inventories had dropped too low to handle the influx of car purchases under the "Cash for Clunkers" program and that it will take 30 - 45 days for them to build the cars they have already taken orders for.
So a few thousand car builders and car parts supplier builders just got called back in to work for at least 5-7 weeks (and the program isn't over yet).
I think SOMEBODY owes Obama an apology....

it takes several thousand people several weeks to produce several TENS of thousands of cars

the demand IS temporary - but the gas they use, the tires they use, the bank debt processors they use, the service contract maintenance mechanics they use, the road and highway repair crews they use, even (yes even) the tow trucks and ambulances they use when they crash are not - they coninuance of income off these vehicles will continue for some time
and no - they are not 'free' but yes they are a better deal than giving some
