Dicaprio in I Claudius??

Yeah, I could see him pulling that off. He is a good actor, he showed it in his earlier Indie films, but I think also in the recent higher budget films- The Aviator, Blood Diamond etc he shows he can use character mannerisms and affectations without going over the top.

i've always thought he is a very good actor.........loved him in ...amongst others films... the man in the iron mask.

the only problem i can see for me is that i thought derek jacobi's playing of claudius was of wondrous proportions......not to be bettered

That is true, the whole production was great, but it's 30 years old now and I think a revamp, if done right will be a good thing- And if they are going to do it then I think DiCaprio is a good choice

Di Caprio has always annoyed me for some reason, always thought he seemed too much like a pretty boy, but every film I see he is pretty damn good.
Watched The Departed for the first time last week, and yet again amongst an awesome cast he was excellent, so who knows, he just may pull it off.

Remake I Claudius !!! why

ok its 30 years old So what.

A modern remake could have better special effects but few are needed.
Could the costume or acting be improved upon ? nope don't think so.

The outside sets could be improved but the majority of the storyline takes place indoors.
I seem to remember they used the palace, senate, temple of vesta, library and marketplace.

A couple of scenes at the games could be shown far far better but such scenes are unnecissary.

The entire story concerns the complex interplay between the characters thats the strength of the writing and the production.

It would also have to be a mini series not a movie, the original was 650 minutes long.

I have no problems with De Caprio as Claudius

I'd imagine they think they can do a decent job of it, and have more than a handful of brits see it. This is not like they're re-making a classic movie; they're making the first ever movie of the book, as the other version was a BBC TV series. This proposal is no more a "re-make" than Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was. I, Claudius has never been attempted in that medium.

Actually, HHGTTG was a bad example as the film version was eye-wateringly terrible. :o

Remakes get done all the time. How many times have Dickens novels, or Shakespeare plays been redone? It's a misconception this is a new thing, it's been going on throughout the history of cinema. To bring the story to a new audience it is sometimes better to create a new production.

Aside from this, I agree that the TV production was great, but film is a different medium and offers the chance of a totally different take on the novel.

No, a whole novel might not, but presumably you would be able to show me such as had been completed. You never know, another author or researcher might come across the fragments you left and write a commentary on it. I certainly remember seeing this on TV. Robert Newton was his usual brilliant self in those scenes from the film which were available.:)

I have my misconceptions as to remakes and Actors is innapropriate roles tested all the time.

The remakes of 12 angry men and inherit the wind are in my opinion every bit as good as the originals.

I also have Al Pacino in "The Merchant of Venice"
Fine actor though he is I wouldn't have suggested him to play a character in a Shakespear play.

I have been wrong before and will be again.
