Well there you have it. I used to love Akira and feel if done right (in a bladerunner esque style) it could be really good.

Opinions / fears?

If they were going to Americanise a popular anime then Ghost in the Shell would have been a better bet than Akira.

It wouldn't suffer so much from being set in the US but having Akira set outside Japan pretty much kills it stone dead.

It's adapting the manga and not the film so it will be different. It might serve as a sort of a run up to the events in the anim

Hollywood is like an out of control Rottweiller (big and stupid), it gets hold of these classic Japanese/Asian films (and actors - Chan, Li, etc) and mauls them to death. The only grateful thing we can hold onto, is that the original will always be there for those that appreciate it as them as they were meant to be.

Japanese Version - American Rip Off
Shichinin no samurai - The Magnificent Seven
Honogurai mizu no soko kara - Dark Water
Ju On - The Grudge
Ringu - The Ring

To play Devil's advocate for a moment: There are good conversions out there.

The one that jumps out to me is The Departed, a superb remake of Internal Affairs.

It doesn't try to directly remake the original, just gives the story an American angle and it works well.

DiCaprio generally doesn't do bad films these days, he's at that level where he can pick and choose projects and I've not seen a bad film from him sine The Beach (and that wasn't his fault, he was just mis-cast), I'd be fairly confident that Akria could be pretty good.

Wasn't it Infernal Affairs? Sorry, i'm being picky.

I agree on the departed and have high hopes for Akira as DiCaprio no doubt has some solid backing.

Personally I don't like DiCraprio, I find him a very bland actor that to me gives nothing emotionally to the viewer.

However that aside, my biggest concern with Akira is that Kaneda the main character is a youth (possible about 15); certainly younger then Leonardo DiCaprio is at the near age of 35. It always annoys me that movie execs think they need a big star to make a film, even if it means mis-casting them.
