Diary of the Dead - George A Romero's 5th zombie film

I couldn't find a thread about this, so for anybody who didn't know about it already I thought I'd start a thread about it.

I think that although many people liked 'Land of the Dead' they felt let down for several reasons, one of which seemed to be that it didn't feel like true Romero and wasn't quite the classic that many had been hoping for like the first 3 of his zombie films.

I think that 'Land of the Dead' had too much studio influence and George couldn't make the movie he wanted to.
Because for this his fifth film in his zombie series he has decided to go independent again without the help of a major studio.

Here are some links regarding 'Diary of the Dead'.

It's due to be released in the Spring this year apparently, so that's just a matter of a few weeks away really.

sounRAB like a good film, have i read it right that it will take place at the same time as NIGHT but from another group of peoples viewpoint,if so it will be good as ive always wanted to see other peoples fight to stay alive against the zombies

It does sound pretty good.
I did read on one of the links that yes it's supposed to start at the same time as 'Night of the Living Dead' but somewhere else away from the action in the first film, but on one of the other links it's not so clear and implies that it's set in the modern day.

It's sort of a bit confusing because it would have to mean that 'Night' wasn't set in 1968 but in the modern day too.
I'm not sure.

But what it is meant to do is re-imagine the origins of the saga by adding new info in order to kick start the zombie series off into a new direction.
I suppose you could liken it to the new relaunch of 'Doctor Who'.

I think at first glance some people were disappointed with the premise because it reminded them of 'The Blair Witch Project' and maybe thought it might be too much like that.
But I think it's supposed to not really be like that, only in as much that it uses first person camera perspective and it's about some students in the wooRAB making their own horror movie.
I thought Blair Witch was cack to be blunt, and it's easy to assume that this film will borrow too heavily from that...I don't think it will.
Blair Witch was never the originator of the first person perspective camera style anyway. And I think in 'Diary of the Dead' is only meant to be used for it's stylistic merits.

In fact I can think of two other films like that off the top of my head. I can think of 'Charlie MoPic', which was a Vietnam war film where you never got to see the person holding the camera for the entire film, which is supposed to be the case here in 'Diary of the Dead'.
It was a very good film as well.
And the other film I'm thinking of is 'Cannibal Holocaust'.
I can see 'Diary of the Dead' having a lot more in common with these two films than Blair Witch.
In fact once the premise of the students making their own horror film is over and done with very early on it quickly changes rapidly into a horror survival story...apparently.

In fact I'd like to think that 'Diary of the Dead' has more in common with 'Cannibal Holocaust' than Blair Witch in terms of horror.
This could be one hell of a scary film.
Apparently the first person style of filming means that the film maker has to use different methoRAB to build up the tension and the horror,...zombies are supposed to suddenly come up out of nowhere due to the peripheral vision being limited. This could lend itself well for some good shocks and scary tension.

I also like the idea that George A Romero has decided to not have a studio involved this time and has decided to make it as an independant film like his earlier zombie films which were the best. 'Land of the Dead' was glossy and slick and lost a lot of what made the earlier zombie films so good.

I'm looking forward to it.

Beware: *Spoilers*

Script Review of 'Diary of the Dead'

If you don't want to know anything about the plot or the characters then resist the temptation of clicking on the link.
They aren't major spoilers about the details of what actually happens, but I thought I'd better put up a warning just in case, as some people like to know as little as possible.
It's more about the synopsis and a vague description of the setup of some plot elements as opposed to that much actual story detail.
