Diabetes FTL

You know, normally I pour my heart out to a select few in IRC, but I felt like maybe other people could be of some support also, I dunno.

Yeah.. So Apparently I have high glucose levels and need to take some 3 hour test Monday, the result, I am sure will be gestational diabetes.
This would explain the 10 lb weight gain in 3 weeks. I'm not complaining about the weight, the ultrasound shows that both babies are 2 lbs now, so that is reassuring, the extra fat is being taken up by them. They say that in cases like these, is when people have c sections for fat babies, but I can't see this as being anything but a blessing, because most twins are extremely underweight./

Still

Am I going to become obese because of this? Diabetes runs in my family, what happens if this is the real deal, and it doesn't go away when the babies come.

And worse yet, does this mean I'm going to have to stick NEEDLES in my skin all of the time? OMFGWTFBBQ I HATE NEEDLES.

It's taken me years to get used to the idea that I've needed to have blood drawn, but to sit there and PURPOSELY POKE MYSELF???!???!??

I cant handle this. I really really can't handle this

Yeah you can. The needles are okay. Diabetes run in my family, trust me it aint the end of the world. In actuality you will lose alot of fucking weight. But you will be ok. I think you can handle it.

I am not a doctor, but I play one on WTF. First please don't worry yourself while you are with child about blood sugar levels. This is only going to add stress to you and the baby. If your non-wtf doctor recommends NOT EATING CHINESE take out :) Then that is the course you must take.
I have had troubles with Low blood sugar levels since Jr. high, you alter your diet and go on with life. So I prescribe have a good night and relax. Peace to you and yours!

Information on your condition

I had an ex-girlfriend who did this kind of stuff and after I read your post I thought, "I think when you get it during pregnancy it goes away after". Which is confirmed with the information in the link above. I hope this makes you feel a little better.

thanks, it does. I'm just worried, because diabetes runs in my family on a massive scale (type 1, not type 2) and I've been reading all over the place that if you get gestational diabetes now, you're more likely to develop diabetes later in life.

My odds just doubled

Right now I'm compiling a list of things I need to stay away from, and things I can eat.

Did you know carrots raise your blood glucose more than ice cream??

I had gestational diabetes with both pregnancies but it all came out all right more often than not it does. It doesn't really make the babies "fat " but, bigger, which is why my first had a 19 1/4 inch head. It will however help your twins get their weight up , Mine were both 6lbs 9 oz and 19 1/2 inches long. Make sure you get plenty of protein as it is a link between healthy mothers and pre-eclampsia . Don't cut calories just those foods that make your sugar high.

P.s. most times you can have a positive urine test then the blood test is negative , if that is the case just continue to be careful. By, the way good luck .
P.P.S Do you know if you're having boys or girls?

My uncle and a friend have diabetes, and it's not half as bad as people make it out to be. My The medicine works so well my friend guzzled a Code Red like it was nothing (hell, that stuff almost has too much sugar for me to feel good after one). Even if you develop it (which I think, even with your family history, is a relatively small if), it won't be that bad.

But yeah, the whole needle thing could get annoying.

ew the glucose test. even if you dont have diabetes I'm sorry cuz that test blows... I've had that test and it found infantile hypoglycemia. It's a condition which is the reverse of diabetes that has similar effects. Fortunately as it was infantile it means I grew out of it with diet and control. Sorry if you have real diabetes. that blows but be prepaired the glucose test really sux and you might get mad sick from it.

if you do seek medical attention immediately. The sickness will be vomiting, delusional state and or helucinations. Including headaches and turned stomach. If you experience this after the test seek medical attention immediately as it might be diabetic shock.

I'll have to note the protein thing, I like eggs anyways. I'm having a girl and a boy, fraternal twins, so 2 placentas. I guess gestational diabetes was bound to happen... They gave me that orange drink and took my blood an hour later. Now they're going to do another higher fructos drink, and check my levels every hour for 3 hours. the difference is the first test I only had to fast for 3 hours, the second test I have to fast for 12.
it doesn't matter though, I went in first thing in the morning. I had already been fasting for 12 hours.

I had both tests with my twins as well and it really sucked. Every time i think about what that stuff taste like it makes my " teeth vibrate" and I die a little;) good luck with your test. ( I had 2 girls)

I have 3 children and was borderline with gestational diabetes with my first 2 sons. My 3rd son I had full blown gestational diabetes. I was always the type of person who could eat anything I wanted and never gain weight. It wasn't surprising when I failed the 3 hour test, my maternal and paternal grandmothers were diabetic. You will have to probably prick yourself several times daily to check your sugar. However, it's not as bad as it seems. The new glucose meters they have are actually pretty painless, you can even do it on your arm.

Hopefully you will be able to control your sugar with diet alone. Stick to the plan your nutrionist gives you. If you are having twins, it is true that they are usually smaller, but diabetic babies do not need the excess weight or fat that this disease causes. You shouldn't have a problem losing weight after they are born. The nice thing about gestational diabetes is that it goes away immediately after birth. So stick to the plan you don't want your twins carrying excess fat that could cause them breathing problems. I had a single birth and they said that if I didn't stick to my diet my child would weigh somewhere around 11 or 12 pounds.

With that said, I stuck to the plan religiously. I gained 19 pounds altogether and my son weighed exactly 8 pounds when he was born the day after his due date.

As far as your weight is concerned, it depends on your body type and what kind of metabolism you have. My children are now 21, 19 and 13 and I am a size 2 weighing in at 108 and 5'7". When I married I weighed 95 pounds 22 years ago. So its really all about metabolism. By the way is this your first pregnancy?

I have diabetes, type 2. It's kind of a shock, but it's not the end of the world. Controlling it through diet has been fairly easy so far; I've been doing it for a few years now. It involves just changing what you eat and how much you eat at a time. White starches will raise your blood sugar faster, but will leave your blood faster as well. Things like white bread, white rice, candy, potatos, etc. I find whole grain starches will help me maintain a level blood sugar for a longer period of time.

Whole grain bread (not white bread with molasses in it. check the label for "whole wheat" being one of the first few ingredients), lots of vegetables, and some of the heavier fruits like bananas.

One of my favorite snacks (that I haven't had in a while, I should have some soon) is dried fruit and whole wheat toast.

You probably don't have to worry about cholesterol, since it's gestational, so I won't go into that.

A good snack for munching is jerky. Try to get the more natural jerkies. It's a low fat, high-protein snack and, if you're exercising, jerky and water is a great way to rehydrate; definitely lower in calories than gatorade. If you don't like jerky, go with propel. Of the same size, propel has about 1/6 of the calories of gatorade.

If you start feeling hot and dizzy and your hands and feet feel hot, put your feet up for a while and don't eat for a while. That means your blood sugar is spiking. If you start to feel light headed and sleepy, eat a little bit of honey or a hard candy to raise your blood sugar for the short term, then have a healthy snack to raise it for a more long term. I like trail mix bars for a steady, long term snack.

Even if You somehow don't have GDM and happen to have the type 1, there is a way to get around those scary needles.
I'm not familiar with these things, but I guess with an insulin pump You just attach an infusion set in a much safer and less painful way. It also saves You the constant tests to see if the sugar is low or high.

In any case, You'll handle it.

Try to hang in there, it'll be all right. Even if the worst case scenario comes to pass, you definitely wouldn't be alone.

Diabetes runs in my family pretty heavily also so I'm sure I'll be in there with the rest of them one of these days.

But we're all pullin for ya!

It runs in my family too but can be pretty well managed through diet. Tostig gave great advice, whole wheat and proteins are key. You do have to be careful with drinks like beer and wine, super high in sugar. Also coffee messes with your insulin regulation so while you may not be drinking it now during your pregnancy even afterwards tea is better.

And babe, you can totally deal with this:)
