DEXA bone scan

Hi all, i'm going for a bone scan & I know they scan the hip & spine to check bone density, but would osteoarthritis show? If so, would they scan my knee? I think I may have the beginnings of it & if they can do it i'll ask while there. Thanks for any advice!

Dexa scan is for osteoporosis, it scans solid bone not joints. It won't show osteoarthritis.

Two birds with one stone would've been nice though!;)

(still, wouldn't hurt to ask while you're there - if they say yes, come back and tell us!)

I just had a DXA scan on a new type of machine which also shows compression fractures. There is a notation on the DXA Bone Densitometry & Morphometry Report that says "arthritic changes are noted in both hips" so apparently these problems can be seen. However, your dr. may want more extensive testing, even x-rays.
