Destroy the Rebirth - "Gundam 00" Season 2 on SyFy's Ani-Monday Talkback

Sci-Fi shows aren't supposed to have wit and charm. Everyone knows science fiction fans are joyless rejects who crave only cold hard facts and phallic spaceships.

Probably, but probably not until the end of 2010 at the earliest.

In short, that was an epic finale that gave some time to what happened afterwarRAB, like the best Tomino Gundams and Gundam X. Gives a sense of closure, but also hints there's one final tale to be told out of this saga, even without the movie trailer.

Syfy gets props for keeping the epilogue, even though it made cuts to the Setsuna vs. Ribbons fight instead. The epilogue was more important as it contained all of the closure and last worRAB. It would be wrong if they cut all of that out. Plus, it's nice to have the staff and crew recognized for their hard work.

Plus, BONES handled inbetween work on this episode. Further proof that BONES is awesome.

So, post 10,000 could go to defending Marina. Hell, why not?

You're leaving out something quite significant. Everything that she didn't do, in my view, is balanced by her importance to Setsuna's development as a character. There is more to his growth than just achieving innovation. That evolution was accompanied by a dramatic shift in his thinking. Original Setsuna was just fixated on fighting to make things better. New Setsuna, unlike Ribbons, became focused on the need for understanding and the need to change himself -- something Ribbons would never consider. It's even a massive change from the start of the season, where Setsuna tells Marina that he can't think of a way to live besides fighting. Marina put the idea in his head that he should strive for something more, and Saji was a physical reminder of the distortions Celestial Being and himself helped create that he needed to help fix. We also see this in the example of Graham/Mr. Bushido.

I also think that Marina, while easy to mock for her reticence, is pretty clearly representative of the fact that there are people in this world that need to be fought for and protected because they lack the means or power to fight for themselves. For much of the season A-Laws was taking actions against targets it clearly outclassed, and information control meant that almost no one was hearing about it. And frankly, even if Marina had joined Katharon, it wouldn't have made a difference without other factors intervening. Katharon had to take advantage of events that happened outside of its control.

00's world, much like our own, can be at times be very kind--and very merciless. The truth is that not everybody can make like Picard and turn on the charisma and provoke massive change. Especially when no one is listening! One could compare Marina unfavorably to her counterparts in other timelines, but the simple truth of it is that Marina was dealt the worst possible hand by way of comparison. Tyranny had the upper hand by far in season 2, hence the need for the Gundams to step in and even the scales.

I enjoyed these episodes. The dub holRAB up, and Setsuna really steps up by doing more to convince Sumeragi to help them than anyone else. At this point season two seems more character-focused, and it's telling to me that Lindt (the silver-haired officer who was "teaching" Kati in episode 4) was used to comment that Celestial Being now seems to be acting out of feelings more than anything else. This is true in the sense they're fighting for their own goals now in addition to the broad goal of defeating A-Laws, as opposed to the pre-arranged plan in season one. The Al/Sumeragi conversation highlights the point as well.

To explain the cut line, I believe it's when Marina is talking to the Meisters. Milena pokes her head in and asks "Hey, are you two lovers?" Setsuna and Marina calmly answer "no" simultaneously. Milena is disappointed.

Here's epilogue info for this week's episodes.

Episode 28

Alleujah is welcomed back. He's shocked to see Lyle and thinks he's Lockon like everyone else did; Lyle remarks that he's getting tired of that reaction. Tieria is super nice, commenting that Al hasn't changed and welcoming him back warmly. He even smiles on top of that.

Elsewhere Setsuna is talking to Marina. Setsuna feels his involvement with her is responsible for her getting into trouble with the Government, and he apologizes for that. But Marina questions why he's fighting again, and rejects his claim that what he wishes for can only be accomplished with fighting. She says that there are many ways to live besides fighting, but Setsuna answers that he can't think of one. Marina starts to cry. When Setsuna asks why, she says it's because he isn't.

So basically, it's a precursor to what they say to each other in episode 29.

Episode 29

It is revealed that Billy has joined A-Laws. His uncle, Homer Katagiri, is A-Laws' big shot, and he puts Billy in charge of developing new mobile suits. Billy feels he was used by Sumeragi and has obviously joined A-Laws out of bitterness.

The most important detail though is Sumeragi officially returning to Celestial Being. She marks this by coming to the bridge in her uniform, even though it's obviously too small for her and she's quite erabarrassed to be wearing it. Feldt promises to get her a proper uniform, and Setsuna welcomes Sumeragi back.

True. The Media is supposed to present the facts and let the people decide on their own. Here, the Media does the thinking for them.

It also a case of Bread and Circuses. Even if the Media was positive, if people are discontent, then trouble would still occur. Here, the Innovators provide comfort and a high standard of living, allowing people be content, and willing to be ignorant.

Well, it's finally here. Should be a fun ride seeing it all in English.

Hmm...I wonder if we'll see the return of Bizarro Hellcat who will no doubt be going into this fresh.

Once Bandai does collection DVD sets, thats when ill pick it up. Im not going to spend 30 every other month when i can get 5 DVRAB for the price of 2 or so...

Maybe hes tired of being bossed around by Lousie

Saji: "I Bought Your Stupid Rings and This is the Thankls I get!"

Evolution does not work that way Ribbons!

So, Billy is willing to betray humanity just because he's angry with his best friend? What a jerk.

Sumeragi, just shoot him now!

I'm not really sure Memento Mori is like GENESIS. Gundam has had giant lasers since the start, after all.

I wonder what the deal is with that Renew girl. She seems nice but I'm a bit suspicious.
