Desperate!! How can i ever re-set my sleep patterns again?

I have a very chronic problem whereby i cannot sleep at night. I'm a habitual night owl. I have tried soo often to change this.
Its so painful staying awake at times that don't feel normal that i often feel physically sick from tiredness, not to mention disorientated and generally 'wired'.
I'm trying to work it out with my doctor and have tried melatonin and currently amitripylene, and other sleeping tablets. The amitriplene isn't working..the sleeping tablets made me feel 'hit by a bus'.
I feel permanently jet lagged and out of sync with everything and everyone.
I just can't seem to re-set myself. How long is it supposed to take? Do i just need to be resigned to this?
Any suggestions are so welcome.

Also...i blame pms for giving me insomnia in the first place and then i get super tired and hypersommnia that i sleep too much which then throughs regular hours out of balance again!!
