Desire vs N1 - voice/upgrading?

So, i was SO set on getting the Nexus One, but since I can't get it from a seller in my country it's quite the hazzle.
NOW, i was SO set on N1 and then I found the Desire.
For me the biggest problem is the whole lack of voice control (or atleast i can't get it confirmed). Can you install via an app or do you have to install it via root and a new rom (HOW risky is this)?
This is something I could actually see myself using ALOT for sending texts.
Also, when Android is updated, will the Desire (like i think the N1 is) be able to be updated?

EDIT1: Am I correct in my findings that Desire actually has voice-to-text for example sending text messages BUT that it does not work for example searching the internet and so forth?
 
and how exactly do you remove the sense ui?

when going into applications->manage applications-> HTC Sense (clearing it as default and force closing it)

When you then hit the home key, an option window to go back to standard android 2.1 does not come up, it just reloads sense anyway..
 
Don't force close it, when you clear the default press the home key and you will have the option of choosing sense or the regular home panel.
 
How would that change anything going to change it back to original?
Also, when Google releases N1 in Europe, will it even include Google Voice?
 
There are some differences I'm aware of.
N1 has a very good noise cancelling dual microphone setup.#N1 has voice input just about everywhere.N1 has a notification light in the trackball.Desire has slightly more RAM.Desire has optical trackball.Desire has SenseUI.The phones have slightly different bands (Desire won't have 3G in US).
Does anyone know if the Desire has a multi-colour LED on it anywhere? I rely quite heavily on different colours meaning different things when the LED flashes. But the N1 has it nerfed to be white only and a slow blink rate unless you root, and I can't find any information about whether the Desire even has one.
 
I can half answer my own question. I was in a T-Mobile store today and had a play with the HTC Desire. It didn't have a Google account active on it, so I couldn't test any apps on it that control the LED. However, I did notice in one of the settings menus on the Sense UI that you can turn LED notification on/off for a variety of things (Email, SMS, Missed Calls, etc). Their didn't seem to be an option to set any colours. I never saw the LED actually working.

@M-Dawg - sorry, what can be installed on any Android phone? What isn't limited to the N1? The site you linked to is huge and has lots of sub-pages so I'm not sure what you're referring to.
