What Dreams May Come

I'm thinking of how I want to decorate my place, and I know what elements/colours I want to incorporate, but I don't have much to go on from there.
The colours I want to use are (a more violet than blue) indigo, (more orange than red) copper, and new spring green.
The elements I want to use are wood, metal, stone, and glass.
I definitely want the look to have a base/accent/detail type theme (I see so many homes that inundate a completely *blank* 'canvas' with tons and tons of only details, and the result is just blech.)
I want the overall look to be the furthest thing possible from "oatmeal cookies, quilts and fireside chats" (aka Paula Deen and the your neighborhood mammy-type would never live there) *without* being "cold, distant, overly modern, waiting room", and still have that "people do live here, it's not just a magazine shoot" feel. Like light and open. NO Wal-mart/K-Mart/Target type style!
What design tips/suggestions/ideas would you give for this?
Thanks! =D
