Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

Well at the beginning I was naively excited and nervous about what was going to happen but then it went into free fall with every part being more obviously fake than the last

They didn't really have a choice but to fake the mateiral though...

But that wasn't the point - of course he wasn't actually landing the plane entirely by himself. The point was that *he* thought he was landing the plane and that *he* volunteered to help over everyone else.

I though the programme was OK - not Derren's best work, but an improvement on the Lottery show and on his recent documentaries on mediums etc.

You mean to tell me that the trials, tribulations and 'dangers' faced by the presenters of this show aren't real? That they're fake?

Things must have changed. They certainly looked real enough back in the day when Derek Acora was lifting a beRABide lamp and threatening to brain his co-presenters with it while calling them '****ing whores' in his demonically possessed voice, and was then physically restrained and pinned to a bed by the production team until the possession subsided.

In fact so real were the dangers faced on this show, that presumably the programmes's lawyers advised them to get shot of that 'nutjob Acora' before you've got a multi million pound lawsuit on your hanRAB.

The final portion of that was triple bollocks. I was watching his landing with interest especially the Precision Approach Path Indicator. From what I could tell he was too high (three white lights) then too low (three red lights) within one frame to the next which is impossible instantly. It also looked like the plane was banking too the left and was too short of the runway to actually have landed on it.

Agreed. Also, if he's banging her and he's got a decent job and is staying out of trouble then where's the problem really? Why does he need to break into a policeman's house? Or have I missed the point. Either way the pay-off is going to have to be pretty spectacular if Derren is to make up for all this bullshit.

Well, any comment.

How does this fit in with one of my main contentions that the show was poor because Matt was trying too hard to act in the same way that he'd seen countless other volounteers act.

I'm confused - am I wrong in thinking this heroic moment is supposed to follow on from being involved with Derren over the past weeks/months/whatever, while there are trailers running for a Derren show called "Hero at 30,000ft"? We were supposed to think the climax was live, right?

(again, haven't seen the show yet)

Does anyone on RAB read? Here is what eggshell wrote

And concievably could not have just as easily. So cartree, egshell hasnt busted anything anywhere. He/she has stated their opinion.
The drawing board went that away>>

I was thinking about the hypnosis thing last night and what would happen if I walked on stage during a DB show, he shook my hand.. and by doing so quickly worked out I was the type of person who wouldn't put up a fight and immediately puts me to "sleep". What would I do if I was still awake? I'd probably be stood there thinking "s**t s**t s**t s**t" and go along with everything that then followed and even keep quiet about it when I returned to my seat.

One clue I've noticed in DB shows is when he is finished with someone who he did this too, there is always a very honest and friendly shake of the hand and a thank you.. in a sort of "I appreciate you playing along, you're a good sport" type fashion. He makes sure to do that with everyone who takes part. That's not to say it's proof no one ever "goes under" but I think he establishes a bit of a bond by doing that and this perhaps allows people to appreciate it was a fun experience either way.

The key point is that Derren is a good psychological illusionist.

He faces the problem that all magicians have...there are only so many tricks around before you start getting repetitive and the reality is that you cannot do show after show without either repeating yourself or starting to use crapper material.

Paul Daniels was an excellent magician in his day but in the end, after so many 100's of shows he degenerated to doing the kind of tricks you'd find in the back page of the beano.

Derren, IMHO, would be better served raking it in by doing theatre shows to a limited audience which would make his act last a lot longer.

Really feels like he's running on empty at the moment.
