Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

Ah, bless ;)

Matt was as in on it as everyone else. The trick, as with all his recent specials, was on the audience not the people in it. In this case the only point of it was to make some people believe that they might be on the receiving end of a similar trick tomorrow and in the 30 days ahead.

Over an hour of ever more ridiculous build-up for the weakest of reveals.

It was piss poor television.

The more I think about it, the more I dislike last night's show. I know I was defending it a bit last night but I have to admit a lot of the time I was cringing and while some things seemed so fake at the time, I keep thinking of more today while I'm actually considering it.

Thing is... even if it was a fake, which I think a pretty high percentage (as opposed to the tiny percentage DB has seen) think is true, it could still be entertaining. Like that show Space Cadets that I've seen mentioned in here. I remember a lot of people theorizing that was fake before the final episode, and that everyone might be in on it, but it was still damn entertaining to watch. And Derren Brown's shows usually are, with all the great 'tricks' he does, like all the segments from Trick of the Mind. But beyond that scene where Matt was held up at gunpoint, there wasn't really anything Derren Brown-ish in this. It just felt so different to his usual stuff, and so weird.

People are scrutinizing this show too much IMO, in the grand scheme of things some things arent important to the overall show.To explain everything would have made it a longer show and less interesting maybe. Some things have to be edited!
What happened to the van and where the band came from arent that important-the van served its purpose,is it neccassary to explain? Likewise the neighbours asking questions, what does it matter? Maybe Matt told them what happened? RAB cant we fill in the blanks for ourselves? Some programs attempt to credit the viewer with intelligence, some things we have to accept on trust. Its not a movie with a plot where things need explaining.
We are seeing things from Matts perspective, and Im sure it was explained to him somehow.

Eggshell

He stated what the show was about,he didnt start with his usual disclaimer-enough for regular viewers -for those arent it didnt matter.

If he were to make the same shows over and ver people would moan, he is trying different things.
Damned if he does and damned if he doesnt.

Also to claim it dross is ridiculous. As I said it didnt really grip me ,but as a TV entertainment show it was far better than anything else this week.

I quite agree Inspiration - my problem with Derren (he'll be mortified) is the hypocrisy in the bad science he perpetuates. When he's doing tricks like Oracle, we know it's a trick, and tbh I'm not that bothered about trying to pick it apart. I think that whole discussion arose out of the "stooge" debate, and I'm happy that an accomplice could be used to nick carRAB, but possibly isn't even necessary. Anyway, I find this interference acceptable in terms of the trick.

The problem is he often produces 'serious' scientific pieces where he'll expose some fakery or other, but then juxtaposes it with his own nonsense re NLP, suggestion and hypnosis. I don't think the distinction between the two is clear (we've seen them intertwined in the same show), and as such there are many, many people who believe in hypnosis/NLP to a stupid degree because of him.

(Plus, shows like Hero, which had no tricks at all in, and just somebody knowingly playing role plays, which is just out-and-out garbage.)

Didn't think it was as bad as everyone seems to think. I still like Derren anyway. Hopefully, after this, threaRAB for his future projects won't be filled with you lot moaning eh? :p

Further to the "Derren deliberately failed the casino trick conspiracy," I now discover...
Not only did the truck that Derren walked past display the number the ball landed on...
Tim Westwood, a guest on the show, also wore a T-shirt displaying the same number... :D

Yeah, as I've said repeatedly I don't think these people are actors. I do think though, that Derren has a stream of willing volunteers for such stunts and a simple audition process will give him what he neeRAB, a "non-stooge" who will completely play the part as required.

(As for keeping somebody asleep for 13 hours and delivering them to Marrakech without them knowing what's going on. Puh-lease.)
