Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

It was obvious they were going to let him 'land' the plane no matter what he did. And given the lapse of time between being in the real plane and being 'hyptnotised' on the simulator, he obviously knew he wan't flying a real plane.

I don't think it does. At least not in the sense of "having command over somebody".

I think people who partake in hypnosis for entertainment do so fully aware that they are pretending, and fully aware of how they are supposed to act.

If you have found a way of testing this, and proven it not to be the case, I'd be delighted to review it.

Id e interested to see this.Link?

Why not? Im a fan of his work in general and respect him for wanting to make good TV.Oh and there was no "couldnt be bothered" you making more false assumptions?

Highly possible.

I wouldn't be too harsh on him over "The Oracle", the impression I got was that it was always a history lesson of sorts.. demonstrating how this particular trick used to be done back in the day. I don't think he ever suggested he was really using special powers to read the carRAB or anything like that. His dramatic collapse at the end was a hint that what we'd seen was a performance.

That is where I think Derren excels. I think once people drop this desire to examine every tiny detail of his acts and just appreciate his show for what it is.. a man filling venues all over the country full of people who are left amazed, curious and impressed about what they're seeing.. regardless of how its pulled off.. it's a fantastic show.

That's one of the problems with the internet.. no longer do you experience an event and form your own opinions and keep them.. now they're shared with others who chip in with their opinions and before you know it.. a show you actually enjoyed at the time is ruined by the constant picking over tiny details. Which is perfectly ok of course. Not suggesting people shouldn't do it. But sometimes I think people lose a sense of perception, getting angry that he may have had someone look at the carRAB in the hat. It still left you amazed during the show and after it. It's just when you read the theory later on the interweb that you feel 'robbed'.. but were you really robbed? Or were you gifted with an awesome night of entertainment? I suspect it's the later.

So will Matt get his flight for free seeing as he's taken over as pilot? Actually, just realised it's Ryanair so he'll probably be charged for the privilege of going into the cockpit.

I don't mind if people find it entertaining.

I don't like the people having a go at those pointing out why they think it's fake (not you), but some posters.

To be honest, it only annoys me because I think Derren used to be such a great entertainer.

His stunts were intelligent and thought provoking- now they just seem ridiculous and dumbed down.

It's funny, because I think it makes perfect sense for all those reasons. But even taking a step back - the explanation was that he was going to "calculate" where the ball would land similar to how a computer would. There are computers which can do this, but they certainly don't give you THE number, they can indicate an area of the wheel but even then it's not 100%. You're happy that this is what he was doing? If that's the case, he could do it over and over. He could have made a follow-up, just for his website, where he showed us him doing this (instead of posting that Stewie impression)

The casino footage was definitely fake. Most tellingly, the audio didn't match with the visual when Derren approached the table; the croupier called a different number to what the screen showed the ball was in. But anyway, he was also already filming with a couple of cameras that he'd already shown us to be the size of a healthy dildo, despite insisting that you couldn't get away with any kind of electical equipment (the computer to do the job would be a fraction of the size).

And besides - getting one out is still impressive. So even if it was a genuine attempt and you (and others) deem it an embarrassing failure, I wouldn't. But that's beside the point, since it wasn't. But that's why the fake footage was necessary, to make it a near miss. (And also, of course, to avoid the risk of filming live in a real casino, which he possibly/probably wouldn't have got away with.)

I also disagree that it wasn't funny the way it was done. If I take it completely at face value (which I'm still not sure is correct btw) the joke was wholly on Ben, since he would have definitely been expecting the payout. (Of course, the only way he could have got the payout is if it came out of Derren's own pocket)
