Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

Not in that league though - but thankyou. :)

Lots of comments in this thread will stay in my mind and make me smile - particularly that one I highlighted.

It's all a meta mind game. What he's been doing with all the recent programmes is work his mind tricks on TV executives to make them keep allowing him to churn out less and less plausible TV programmes whilst smirking throughout the making of them because of the weight of all their money in their pockets. I'm kind of hoping his final ever c4 programme involves him burning all the cash KLF style and laughing in the face of the director of programming.

Never seen SImpsons, but as I said its not important, it was a side salad(poor comparison but it will do)to the street party, not all that important really. Is it a stretch to think they were planted like the van driver in some way?
They were'nt important,I repeat: do you want every nuance explaining?

My point was that Matts performance was so poor because, as an avid fan of Derrens who'd watched his shows time and time again he was trying too hard, and failing, to act in the same way he'd seen other volounteers act.

Also Matt was auditioning for a game show in theory, bit of a happy coincidence then that he found he was actually auditioning to be in his heros show.

Also the selling point of taking some ordinary Joe and turning him into a hero loses some of its impact when you translate it to " take my biggest fan and turn him into a hero"

I agree. When on his game he is very good at what he does, The Joe Power thing was brilliantly done. Didn't help that Power was a complete tosser throughout though.

Because, if it's essentially a role-play with the aim of self-empowerment, then Matt is supposed to be learning positive ways of behaving that he can take with him into his real life, right?

How does stealing a van fit the "positive self-help" angle? Or breaking into someones house? The message of these scenarios is confusing at best. Are we to take it that DB's way to self-empowerment is to be recklessly impulsive and break the law?

I think you have missed the hidden miracle in all this. Between day 12 and day 15 this person of low self esteem managed to apply for and get a mortgage, exchange contracts on and then buy a house.

I'd touch a crocodile to be able to pull that stunt off.
