At least Jet2 fly where they say they're going to fly. On Ryanair you might land 100 miles from the city you thought you were going to.
AVL? No such thing. Nor does a ground computer or radar "talk to the plane". I suspect the pilot was trying to give a simplified explanation of autoland, which does exist in many airliners, has done since the mid 1960s.
I agree the programme was crap though.
Because it's fun to discuss the flaws and failings of a poorly made show like this. So bad it's good. This thread was the best part of the show.
What amazes me is why people defend him when he presents drivel like this. The theory is it's all fake so only the audience was fooled. Surely that's true of all TV drama, all are fiction made with actors, designed to entertain the viewers. So what does DB add except for a few faked "candid camera" sequences? It matters not that he's been amazing in previous shows. What did he do which was amazing in THIS show?
He might have tricked the gullible. From the moment he left a jack-in-the-box on the doorstep the show screamed "scripted set-up." How many people of Matt's age (or even a lot older) will have seen such a thing, yet Matt picked it up and cranked the handle. Most people these days would be looking for an on/off button instead.
The scene with the train was laughably poor. The train at some points appeared to be stationary. The view from the cab showed a completely different scene. As others have pointed out, the scene by the tracks was clearly shot from several normal cameras, yet Matt somehow didn't notice the crew. He's in a straitjacket for the first time, yet somehow miraculously manages to perform an escape at the last minute.
Who's gullible enough to be fooled by this, apart from the posters to Derren's blog?

As for the "live" bit it was clear the flight scene was going to be recorded when they showed a clip of it in the "coming next" before an ad break. "Live" was a con to get people to watch who might think the last part "at 30,000 feet" was going to happen for real.
The landing in the simulator was farcical. Not even Derren Brown could have hypnotised someone who has never seen an airliner flightdeck be able to land simply with someone talking to them. A complete novice can do it with a bit of assistance from someone in the other seat, but with the Captain passed out and the First Officer nowhere to be seen...
