Deposit refund

Ok, so I've got a question that I'm not sure if anyone can answer, but I'll give it a go...

I started a contract with Verizon back in October '07, and had to pay a $400 deposit. They told me that after the first year is up, I will receive the deposit back as long as I make all of my consecutive payments. I received a free phone from work, so I'd like to cancel my line with Verizon. Is there a way to get that $400 back? Or do I have to wait until October to get the refund back, then cancel? I was told by a friend that they actually just credit that amount toward your account rather than cutting you a check. Is this true? I'd ideally like to port my number from Verizon to cancel my Verizon plan, but I'm afraid that if I do that, I won't get my deposit back. I understand there's a termination fee, but would I not get the deposit back, and still have to pay the $200 termination fee? Any insight would be greatly appreciated

You are really SOL. You will get your deposit back as Verizon credit if you wait till october, you will also lose any credits on your account if you cancel early PLUS you will have to pay the fee (usually $175 per line). So if you really want to cancel I would wait until the credits you will earn in october run out. at least you will get a few months of "Free" service allowing you to save up to cancel.
